Seaweed-Derived Extract Targets Porphyr’ageing to Modulate the Visible Signs of Aging in Human Skin

open access: yesMarine Drugs
Recent evidence suggests that microbiota-derived porphyrins contribute to skin aging, a phenomenon termed porphyr’aging. These pro-inflammatory molecules alter the expression of genes involved in senescence, trigger melanogenesis, and decrease collagen I

MiR‐513a promotes human erythroid differentiation by modulating c‐Jun

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
During early human erythropoiesis, miR‐513a promoted erythroid differentiation in primary human CD34+ hematopoietic stem‐progenitor cells and human TF‐1 erythroleukemic cells by indirectly decreasing c‐Jun and phospho‐c‐Jun expression, which are associated with increased GATA1 expression.

A New Generation of Postbiotics for Skin and Scalp: In Situ Production of Lipid Metabolites by Malassezia

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Effects of pre- and probiotics on intestinal health are well researched and microbiome-targeting solutions are commercially available. Even though a trend to appreciate the presence of certain microbes on the skin is seeing an increase in momentum, our ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Quantum beauty: real and ideal

open access: yes, 2019
© Darwin College, 2013. When I was asked to talk about quantum beauty I was a little startled, because the beauty of quantum theory is something that practising physicists, in the course of their work, rarely think about or mention.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Beauty Contested. How much of Keynes’ remains in Behavioural Economics Beauty Contests? [PDF]

open access: yes
In one of the most famous passages of economic literature, John Maynard Keynes (1936, p.156) likens the stock market to a beauty contest in which the winners are those who anticipate the average opinion. Recently there have been attempts at investigating

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Evaluation of the Efficacy of a 2-MNG-Containing Serum on Improving Skin Tone and Hyperpigmentation

open access: yesDermatology and Therapy
Introduction Hyperpigmentation disorders and skin tone unevenness are a very frequent concern worldwide, especially in China; 2-mercaptonicotinoyl glycine (2-MNG, Melasyl®) is an innovative anti-pigmentation ingredient which binds with melanin precursors,
