Selective Early Excision Versus a Conservative Surgical Approach. Management of Deep Burn Injury in a Resource‐Restricted Setting: A Prospective, Observational Study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Operative intervention for deep burn injury confers a survival advantage compared to healing by secondary intention and dressings alone. Mortality benefits from early surgery may not extend to resource‐restricted environments. There are major deficiencies in the delivery of advanced burn care in low‐resource settings.

Age, Frailty, and Comorbidity as Predictors of Mortality and Failure to Rescue After Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery: A National Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Many older adults undergo gastrointestinal (GI) cancer surgery, yet the relative impacts of advanced age, comorbidity, and frailty on postoperative mortality and failure to rescue (FTR) remain unclear. We aimed to compare the impacts of these factors on postoperative outcomes in a large population‐based cohort.

A comparison of thermal drones and camera trap population estimates for Sitka black‐tailed deer in Alaska

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
One of the most difficult challenges for wildlife managers is reliably estimating wildlife populations. Camera traps combined with spatial capture–recapture (SCR) models are a popular tool for population estimation. They have limitations, however, including long data processing times.

Suitable habitat of Himalayan wolf in Upper Mustang, Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Decades ago, the Himalayan wolf Canis lupus chanco, a genetically distinct sub‐species of the gray wolf Canis lupus, faced persecution by local communities in the Nepalese Himalayas. Recently, wolf populations have returned and recolonized, sparking concerns about conflicts over livestock depredation, and emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive ...

Monitoring the effects of ovariectomy on seasonal movement behavior in suburban female white‐tailed deer using internet of things‐enabled devices

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Abundant deer populations often cause conflicts in suburban communities, yet traditional population reduction methods, such as controlled hunting, can be challenging to implement. Fertility control, specifically through ovariectomy, can limit reproduction and reduce populations in certain settings, but its effect on movement behavior remains poorly ...

Estimating red deer Cervus elaphus population density using drones in a steep and rugged terrain

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Precise and accurate information about population density, crucial for wildlife management, is difficult to obtain for elusive species living in dense forests or steep and inaccessible terrain. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we developed a method for obtaining absolute population estimates of ungulates living in steep, rugged, and partly ...
