Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

A comparative analysis of generalized additive models for obesity risk prediction

open access: yesHealthcare Analytics
Obesity is a growing global health crisis, and traditional regression models often fail to capture the complex relationships between risk factors, limiting predictive accuracy and hindering effective public health interventions.

Black Italianità: Citizenship and Belonging in the Black Mediterranean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This article discusses the fraught relationship between legal citizenship and Black belonging as depicted in the works of two Black Italian women writers. The protagonists in the short story “Salsicce” (“Sausages”) by Igiaba Scego and the novella Kkeywa:

Globular cluster chemistry in fast rotating dwarf stars belonging to intermediate age open clusters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
(shortened) The peculiar chemistry observed in the multiple populations of Galactic globular clusters is not generally found in other systems like dwarf galaxies and open clusters, and at the moment no model can fully explain its presence.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Identity and Belonging as Positionality. An Approach from Intersectionality

open access: yesContratexto, 2016
In this article terms we may use to refer to identities and the meanings of belonging in a multicultural context are considered. For this purpose, we study Stuart Hall’s concept of vernacular cosmopolitism, which recognizes identities as points of suture

Diaspora and tourism: Transylvanian Saxons visiting the homeland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper discusses visits to the homeland made by Transylvanian Saxons and their descendants, now mainly living in Germany, after their emigration from the former Saxon areas of Transylvania (Romania). The aim is to understand what compels those people

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Factors that influence anemia prevalence: a comparative study of datasets from Russia and South Africa

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background The prevalence of anemia is heterogeneous: different countries and population groups face varying risks of the disease. By identifying social, demographic, and economic factors, policymakers can define risk groups based on lifestyle and tailor
