The Effect of a Benzothiadiazine, Diazoxide, on Carbohydrate Metabolism
Diabetes, 1964After the oral, intraperitoneal, or intravenous administration of an antihypertensive, antidiuretic benzothiadiazine, diazoxide, to dogs, rabbits, mice, and rats, rapid hyperglycemia is promptly elicited, but of short duration, and reversible. The hyperglycemia is accompanied by increased hepatic glycogenolysis, serum lactate and pyruvate, and blood ...

Production of potassium depletion by benzothiadiazine compounds∗
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1962Abstract Secondary hyperaldosteronism was simulated in seven patients by the administration of desoxycorticosterone acetate (DCA) in doses of 30 mg. per day. In these patients the sodium-retaining properties of this agent appeared to be independent of total exchangeable sodium.

Drug-Induced Diabetes: Diabetogenic Activity of Long-Term Administration of Benzothiadiazines
, 1963During the course of studies of hypertensive patients, including a double blind study, observations were made concerning the diabetogenic activity of benzothiadiazine derivatives.

Spectrophotometric determination of benzothiadiazines in dosage forms
Talanta, 1986The analytical utility of ethyl acetoacetate for the spectrophotometric determination of benzothiadiazine diuretics has been studied. The procedure developed is based on coupling of the diazotized drugs with the reagent, which possesses an active methylene group. The stoichiometry of the reaction is presented.

Diuretic Effects of Flumethiazide, a Benzothiadiazine Derivative
Postgraduate Medicine, 1959Flumethiazide is a potent diuretic agent which may be safely administered to cardiac patients. Both short-term and long-term studies of a large group of patients with congestive heart-failure showed that flumethiazide produced no significant change in the glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow or blood pressure.Bio-assay studies revealed that ...

The hyperglycemic activity of benzothiadiazine and other diuretics
Life Sciences, 1965Abstract Considerable evidence is available which demontrates the tendency of certain benzothiadiazine diuretics to elevate blood glucose values in seemingly normal, as well as diabetic or pre-diabetic, individuals (1–5). A recent review (5) concerning the benzothiadiazine diuretics suggest that the hyperglycemic potential of all members of this ...

Reaction of a series of aniline derivatives with chlorosulphonyl isocyanate followed by cyclisation of the resulting chlorosulphonylureas with Lewis acids gives good yields of 2H-1,2,4-benzothiazidazin-3(4H)-one 1,1-dioxides. These, upon acid hydrolysis,

Benzothiadiazines and Diabetes Mellitus
JAMA, 1964To the Editor:— Wolff and his associates ( JAMA 185 :568 [Aug 17] 1963) recently indicated that the induction of diabetes mellitus represents a not infrequent complication associated with the long-term administration of benzothiadiazine diuretics. The evidence consisted of the observation that the fasting blood sugar value in 45 patients averaged 97 ...

A Non-diuretic Benzothiadiazine with Anti-hypertensive Properties
Nature, 1961IN recent years the benzothiadiazine diuretics have become the drugs of choice for treating mild to moderate hypertension. Although their anti-hypertensive effect is relatively weak, they are quite non-toxic and are well absorbed orally. The mechanisms by which these agents reduce blood pressure in hypertensive individuals are not known.
