Antibodies to beta(2)-glycoprotein I in ischemic stroke.
Cerebrovascular diseases (Basel, Switzerland), 2000Antibodies to beta(2)-glycoprotein (beta(2)-GPI) have been associated with recurrent thrombotic events in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The present study investigated the prevalence of antibodies to beta(2)-GPI in an unselected group of patients with ischemic stroke.

beta 2 glycoprotein-I (beta 2GPI), a cofactor for antiphospholipid antibody (aPA) binding, binds to many anionic macromolecules including heparin. The nature of this interaction with heparin is not well understood and its effect on the purported biological functions of beta 2GPI is unknown.

To clarify the role(s) of anti-beta(2) GPI antibodies on thrombosis in anti-phospholipid antibody syndromes (APS), the effect of IgG from three patients on activated protein C (APC) was investigated using phospholipid vesicles and purified proteins. Two of the total IgG inhibited APC activity in the presence of beta(2)GPI, whereas the third IgG did not.
