Cystic fibrosis: model of pathogenesis based on the apical membrane potential [PDF]

open access: yesMedicinski Glasnik, 2015
A simple model of cystic fibrosis (CF) is proposed, based on the apical membrane (ApM) potential. The ApM of epithelial cells is highly permeable to sodium and activation of CFTRs makes it permeable to chloride.

Challenges for the development of a biotic ligand model predicting copper toxicity in estuaries and seas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ 2011 SETAC.An effort is ongoing to develop a biotic ligand model (BLM) that predicts copper (Cu) toxicity in estuarine and marine ...

DABs accumulate bicarbonate

open access: yesNature Microbiology, 2019
A newly discovered energy-linked carbonic anhydrase, DabBA2, is a two-protein complex responsible for inorganic carbon accumulation in the sulfur bacterium Halothiobacillus neapolitanus. DABs are present in a wide range of proteobacterial clades, suggesting that they function in diverse metabolic pathways.

Development of 4T1 breast cancer mouse model system for preclinical carbonic anhydrase IX studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) is a well‐recognised therapeutic target and prognostic biomarker in cancer. We developed and characterised a robust murine breast cancer model system that is suitable for CAIX studies in vitro and in vivo—it comprises both CAIX‐positive and CAIX‐negative controls and provides a solid platform for the comprehensive ...

Ethanolic extract of Anogeissus leiocarpus ameliorates hyperglycaemia, hepato-renal damage, deranged electrolytes and acid-base balance in alloxan-induced diabetes in dogs

open access: yesScientific African, 2022
Anti-diabetic effects of ethanolic extract of stem bark of Anogeissus leiocarpus were investigated in alloxan monohydrate-induced acute type 1 diabetes mellitus (TIDM) extending into chronicity and organic damages in 12 adult Nigerian indigenous dogs ...

Biophysical characterization and ion transport with cell‐based and proteoliposome reconstitution assays of invertebrate K+‐Cl− cotransporters

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The K+‐Cl− cotransporters (KCCs) facilitate the symport of ions across the plasma membrane. They participate in physiological processes including neuronal regulation. Here, we characterized KCCs from Drosophila and Hydra vulgaris. Comparative analyses of transporters provide insights into the mechanism of KCC ion transport, regulation, and evolution ...

The Clinical Efficacy of a Pure Alginate Formulation (Lamina G) for Controlling Symptoms in Individuals with Reflux Symptoms: A Randomized Clinical Study

open access: yesGut and Liver, 2019
Background/Aims Bicarbonate-containing alginate formulations are reported to be effective for controlling reflux symptoms. However, the efficacy of Lamina G alginate without gas production has not been reported.

Mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of cheese whey with cow manure in batch reactor

open access: yesENP Engineering Science Journal, 2022
Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that takes place under very strict operating conditions, including a pH close to neutrality. This experimental work aims to study the effect of pH control on CH4 production in mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion ...

When hot water freezes before cold [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
I suggest that the origin of the Mpemba effect (the freezing of hot water before cold) is freezing-point depression by solutes, either gaseous or solid, whose solubility decreases with increasing temperature so that they are removed when water is heated.

Functional parameters of spermatozoa obtained by a new selection device

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study compares density gradient centrifugation and the LensHooke CA0™ device for sperm separation. DGC requires multiple steps, specialized equipment, and technical expertise. In contrast, the CA0 device offers key practical and methodological advantages, resulting in a faster, simpler, and more affordable sperm selection method.
