Common envelope ejection in massive binary stars - Implications for the progenitors of GW150914 and GW151226 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The recently detected gravitational wave signals (GW150914 and GW151226) of the merger event of a pair of relatively massive stellar-mass black holes (BHs) calls for an investigation of the formation of such progenitor systems in general.

On the properties of contact binary stars

open access: yes, 2004
A catalogue of light curve solutions of contact binary stars has been compiled. It contains the results of 159 light curve solutions. Properties of contact binary stars were studied by using the catalogue data. As it is well known since Lucy's (1968a,b)

Detecting homologous recombination deficiency for breast cancer through integrative analysis of genomic data

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study develops a semi‐supervised classifier integrating multi‐genomic data (1404 training/5893 validation samples) to improve homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) detection in breast cancer. Our method demonstrates prognostic value and predicts chemotherapy/PARP inhibitor sensitivity in HRD+ tumours.

Binary Star Orbits. VI. The Interferometric-spectroscopic Binary 73 Leo

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Discordances in radial-velocity measurements of 73 Leonis, made more than a century ago, gave rise to the first suggestion that this fifth-magnitude star was a binary system, but it was 40 yr before an accurate investigation of the object commenced, and ...

The evolution of massive binary systems [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2020
The evolution of massive stars in close binary systems is significantly different from single star evolution due to a series of interactions between the two stellar components.

Fractal Measures and Nonlinear Dynamics of Overcontact Binaries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Overcontact binary stars are systems of two stars where the component stars are in contact with each other. This implies that they share a common envelope of gas.

Data‐driven discovery of gene expression markers distinguishing pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia subtypes

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates gene expression differences between two major pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) subtypes, B‐cell precursor ALL, and T‐cell ALL, using a data‐driven approach consisting of biostatistics and machine learning methods. Following analysis of a discovery dataset, we find a set of 14 expression markers differentiating the ...

Five New Sirius-like White Dwarf–Main-sequence Star Systems with MagAO-X

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Most known white dwarfs in multiple systems with main-sequence stars have been discovered with M-type companions, because the white dwarf causes detectable UV excess and bluer colors than expected from a single M star.

Distinguishing Boson Stars from Black Holes and Neutron Stars from Tidal Interactions in Inspiraling Binary Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Binary systems containing boson stars---self-gravitating configurations of a complex scalar field--- can potentially mimic black holes or neutron stars as gravitational-wave sources.
