Genetic Contribution to Asthma Informs Acute Chest Syndrome Pathophysiology and Risk Stratification

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a severe complication of sickle cell disease (SCD) occurring in ~50% of patients, some presenting frequent episodes. We lack tools to identify patients at high risk of ACS occurrence or frequent episodes. Epidemiological studies have found an association between asthma and ACS, but whether this link is causal is ...

The Longitudinal Effect of APOL1 Risk Alleles on Sickle Cell Anemia‐Associated Kidney Function

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Progressive kidney injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sickle cell anemia (SCA). The high risk APOL1 G1/G2 variants contribute to the development of kidney disease in individuals of African ancestry, including those with SCA.

Estimating survival rates in ecological studies with small unbalanced sample sizes: an alternative Bayesian point estimator [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Ecology and Software, 2011
Increasingly, the survival rates in experimental ecology are presented using odds ratios or log response ratios, but the use of ratio metrics has a problem when all the individuals have either died or survived in only one replicate.

Assessment of Initial Stay Time and Work‐Rest Scheduling Over Consecutive Moderate‐Intensity Workdays in Hot Environments in Young and Older Males and Females

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Initial stay time (IST), the duration of continuous work before core temperature reaches 38.0°C, has been characterized in young and older adults but not across consecutive work periods or in conjunction with standard work‐rest cycles.

Application of binomial distribution-based statistical process control method in blood quality control

open access: yesZhongguo shuxue zazhi
Objective This study endeavors to introduce the statistical process control (SPC) method to analyze the quality control index concerning red blood cells in additive solution with leukocytes reduced, with the aspiration to advance the effective ...

Rationale of New Grading System: Central Compartment Atopic Disease

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Central compartment atopic disease (CCAD) has recently been recognized as a distinct phenotype within the spectrum of type 2–dominant chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Although international guidelines highlight polypoid changes in the central nasal cavity, standardized diagnostic and classification criteria are still lacking.

Fibroblast Transcriptomics in Molecular Diagnostics of a Comprehensive Dystonia Cohort

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Genomic sequencing leaves >50% of dystonia‐affected individuals without a diagnosis. Where DNA‐oriented approaches remain insufficient, integrating multiomics is essential to advance genome interpretation. Herein, we incorporated RNA sequencing (RNA‐seq) data from 167 patients with dystonia across a range of ages and presentations. Methods We

Discriminating Between Binomial Distributions

open access: yesThe Annals of Mathematical Statistics, 1947
Given a set of $k$ random samples, $x_1, x_2, \cdots, x_k$, from a binomial distribution with parameters $p$ and $n$, it is shown that the familiar binomial index of dispersion $z = \frac{\sum^k_1 (x_i - \bar x)^2}{\bar x\big(1 - \frac{\bar x}{n_0}\big)}$ yields an approximate best critical region independent of $p$ for testing the hypothesis $n = n_0$

Sex‐Specific Genetic Architecture of ALS: Evidence of a Female Protective Effect?

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Background Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shows sex differences in incidence and age of onset, yet the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods We investigated sex‐specific genetic architecture in an Italian ALS cohort with whole‐genome sequencing (1,333 ALS cases, 755 controls).
