Simulated gastrointestinal digestion, intestinal permeation and plasma protein interaction of white, green, and black tea polyphenols [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The gastrointestinal digestion, intestinal permeation, and plasma protein interaction of polyphenols from a single tea cultivar at different stages of processing (white, green, and black teas) were simulated.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Design of bio-nanosystems for oral delivery of functional compounds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Nanotechnology has been referred to as one of the most interesting topics in food technology due to the potentialities of its use by food industry. This calls for studying the behavior of nanosystems as carriers of biological and functional compounds ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Genotype and ripening method affect carotenoid content and bio-accessibility in banana

open access: yesFood & Function
This study concludes that the genotype, ripening methods (natural vs. exogenous ethylene application), and carotenoid bioaccessible content should be considered when setting a nutrition goal for vitamin A biofortification in banana-breeding programs.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Quantification of Macular Carotenoids over a Wide Dynamic Range in Plant Matrices and Caco-2 Cells Using a Single Transferable Analytical Method

open access: yesFoods
Lutein and zeaxanthin are macular carotenoids known for their protective role against major eye diseases. The bio-accessibility of these macular carotenoids is extremely low, with a limited amount synthesised in plants.

Preliminary investigations into the effect of feeding mannan oligosaccharide(MOS) on the genotoxic effect of T-2 toxin in rabbits measured by comet assay [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
T-2 toxin is a secondary fungal metabolite produced by Fusarium species. Several in vitro and in vivo studies described genotoxic potential of T-2 toxin, which is generally accepted to be caused by oxidative stress.

Effect of alginate molecular weight and M/G ratio in beads properties foreseeing the protection of probiotics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
"Available online 1 December 2017"Probiotics are live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host. However, to accomplish this positive influence on Human health, probiotics should survive to the passage ...
