Biochemical Properties of Tissue-Engineered Cartilage [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2014
Microtia is treated with rib cartilage sculpting and staged procedures; though aesthetically pleasing, these constructs lack native ear flexibility. Tissue-engineered (TE) elastic cartilage may bridge this gap; however, TE cartilage implants lead to hypertrophic changes with calcification and loss of flexibility.

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Algorithmic Self-Assembly of DNA: Theoretical Motivations and 2D Assembly Experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Biology makes things far smaller and more complex than anything produced by human engineering. The biotechnology revolution has for the first time given us the tools necessary to consider engineering on the molecular level.

Systems Biology Graphical Notation: Process Description language Level 1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Standard graphical representations have played a crucial role in science and engineering throughout the last century. Without electrical symbolism, it is very likely that our industrial society would not have evolved at the same pace.

Pitfalls in Early Bioprocess Development Using Shake Flask Cultivations

open access: yesEngineering in Life Sciences
For about 100 years, the shake flask has been established for biotechnological cultivations as one of the most important cultivation systems in early process development.

Tailoring tumor-recognizable hyaluronic acid–lipid conjugates to enhance anticancer efficacies of surface-engineered natural killer cells

open access: yesNano Convergence, 2023
Natural killer (NK) cells have clinical advantages in adoptive cell therapy owing to their inherent anticancer efficacy and their ability to identify and eliminate malignant tumors. However, insufficient cancer-targeting ligands on NK cell surfaces often

The carboxylate “gripper” of the substrate is critical for C‐4 stereo‐inversion by UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase (UGAepi) catalyzes NAD+‐dependent interconversion of UDP‐glucuronic acid (UDP‐GlcA) and UDP‐galacturonic acid (UDP‐GalA) via C4‐oxidation, 4‐keto‐intermediate rotation, and C4‐reduction. Here, Borg et al. examined the role of the substrate's carboxylate group in the enzymic mechanism by analyzing NADH‐dependent reduction
