A history of studies of reproductive isolation between Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis

open access: yesFly
Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis are a sister species pair that have been used as a model for studies of reproductive isolation and speciation for almost 100 years owing to their close evolutionary history, well characterized genetic ...

First records of two genera and 20 species of fungi (Basidiomycota, Agaricales) in Montenegro [PDF]

open access: yesBotanica Serbica
Two genera (Chamaemyces and Hydropus) and 20 species of fungi were recorded for the first time for the Montenegrin funga (mycobiota), comprising 27 records from seven municipalities.

Moving to 3D: relationships between coral planar area, surface area and volume [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
Coral reefs are a valuable and vulnerable marine ecosystem. The structure of coral reefs influences their health and ability to fulfill ecosystem functions and services.

Sea surface temperature contributes to marine crocodylomorph evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
During the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, four distinct crocodylomorph lineages colonized the marine environment. They were conspicuously absent from high latitudes, which in the Mesozoic were occupied by warm-blooded ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Adaptation to Climate Change and the Role of Agrobiodiversity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The world’s biological diversity is eroding. This concerns in particular the entire agri-cultural diversity of genes, species and their agrarian ecosystems, the resource base for food. With species becoming extinct, mankind is jeopardised.

Potentiality in Biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We take the potentialities that are studied in the biological sciences (e.g., totipotency) to be an important subtype of biological dispositions. The goal of this paper is twofold: first, we want to provide a detailed understanding of what biological ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

A simple way to overcome the recalcitrance of the water fern Ceratopteris thalictroides (L.) Brongn. to cryopreservation

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2015
Ceratopteris thalictroides is a water fern very sensitive to both dehydration and low temperature. This study focuses on the cryopreservation of this species by encapsulation-dehydration technique, in particular on the effects of pre-culture step ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
