Understanding and acceptance of biological evolution and the nature of science: Studies on university faculty

open access: yes, 2012
There are serious problems with biological evolution education. Since the time of Darwin resistance has existed to the idea that biological evolution via natural selection occurs.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Exploratory Temporal and Evolutionary Insights into the Filoviridae Family Through Multiprotein Phylogeny

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Filoviruses are among the most lethal viral human pathogens known, with significant relevance to public health, yet their evolutionary history remains poorly resolved.

Evolution of Biological Image Stabilization [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2016
The use of vision to coordinate behavior requires an efficient control design that stabilizes the world on the retina or directs the gaze towards salient features in the surroundings. With a level gaze, visual processing tasks are simplified and behaviorally relevant features from the visual environment can be extracted.

Evolving Biological Systems: Evolutionary Pressure to Inefficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The evolution of quantitative details (i.e. “parameter values”) of biological systems is highly under-researched. We use evolutionary algorithms to co-evolve parameters for a generic but biologically plausible topological differential equation model of ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Design and Evolution of Engineered Biological Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Poster presented at the 2005 ICSB meeting, held at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.To date, engineered biological systems have been constructed via a variety of ad hoc approaches. The resulting systems should be thought of as pieces of art. We are

Exploring Comparative Physiology and Evolution: Understanding Homologous Structures with Students

open access: yesCurrent: The Journal of Marine Education
A summer course designed for high school students compared different morphological features that evolved in response to locomotion. This course, as part of the USC Leslie and Bill McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative (USC NAI), provided 20 students ...

Haplodiploidy and the evolution of eusociality : worker reproduction

open access: yes, 2013
The authors acknowledge the European Research Council, the Royal Society, and Balliol College for funding.Hamilton’s haplodiploidy hypothesis suggests that the relatively higher relatedness of full sisters in haplodiploid populations promotes altruistic ...
