Marine biological invasions [PDF]

open access: yes
Biological invasions are one of the main causes of biodiversity decline worldwide. While Japanese knotweed and tiger mosquito are invasive species that are well known to the public, the same could not be said for the American blue crab and the green Algae Caulerpa in the Mediterranean seaside.

The Economics of Controlling a Biological Invasion [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2003
The paper develops a simple economic model of a biological invasion. The natural growth of t he invasion is non-convex and the immediate cost of controlling the invasion depends on the level of current control as well as the current size of the invasion. Greater control raises contr ol costs today while reducing damages - now and in the future.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Differences in responses of invasive and native plants to climate change: a case study of Bidens (Asteracea) from China

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Global warming has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Concurrently, plant invasion has been exacerbated by ongoing climate change, posing a severe ecological threat.

A Thermodynamic Approach to Biological Invasions [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics, 2011
True acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an important polymorphic enzyme of the nervous system, was studied to determine the inhibition of transmission of nerve impulses in muscles of the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, exposed in vitro to organophosphate (OP) insecticides.

Decoding the dynamic extracellular matrix in cancer—3D models and bioscaffolds rewire the rules of tumor progression

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer progression is regulated by the dynamic matrix code of the tumor microenvironment, which influences cellular behavior and disease development. Importantly, matrix remodeling in three‐dimensional cancer models more accurately reflects in vivo conditions compared to conventional two‐dimensional systems.

Reproductive and Pollination Characteristics of Three Understory Impatiens Species

open access: yesHorticulturae
Understory flowering plants often face limitations in pollinator availability. This necessitates an investigation of pollination mechanisms and reproductive traits to understand their survival strategies. Floral syndromes, which are critical determinants

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Coumarin Inhibits Primary Root Growth by Modulating Auxin Signaling via Neddylation

open access: yesBiology
The allelopathic compound coumarin inhibits root growth across numerous species, but its mechanism is unknown. Through a genetic screen in Arabidopsis mutants, we identified the mutants for AXR1 (AUXIN RESISTANT 1) and ECR1 (E1 C-TERMINAL RELATED 1), two

Alien animals in South Africa – composition, introduction history, origins and distribution patterns

open access: yesBothalia: African Biodiversity & Conservation, 2017
Background: There is no comprehensive inventory and analysis of the composition, distribution, origin and rate of introduction of the alien fauna of South Africa. Objectives: To provide such an analysis to facilitate effective ecological management, and
