Quantum phenomena in biological systems

open access: yesMOJ Biology and Medicine, 2020
The functioning of a biological systems, maintaining the dynamic stability of its homeostasis, is provided by regulatory systems. Traditionally, such systems include the nervous and humoral systems of regulation. The third regulatory system of the body, which provides communication in the body, distance interactions according to the "informational ...

Special Issue on Complexation of Metals in Natural Fluids: Simulations, Experiments and Applications

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
The complexation of metals in natural fluids, such as natural waters and biological fluids, is a key process in the context of environmental and biological phenomena [...]

Beyond an Anthropomorphic Template [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In our endeavours to explore all possible forms that non-terrestrial communication may encompass, eventually we must throw off our anthropomorphic bias and investigate the implications of post-biological intelligence on SETI search strategies.

Why is the Teleological Argument so Popular?

open access: yesStudia Humana, 2023
Why are teleological arguments based on biological phenomena so popular? My explanation is that teleological properties are presented in our experiences of biological phenomena.

Science and Paranormal Phenomena [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In order to ground my approach to the study of paranormal phenomena, I first explain my operational approach to physics, and to the ``historical'' sciences of cosmic, biological, human, social and political evolution. I then indicate why I believe that ``

A Review of Cavitation Uses and Problems in Medicine; Invited Lecture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
There are an increasing number of biological and bioengineering contexts in which cavitation is either utilized to create some desired effect or occurs as a byproduct of some other process.

Entropic electrokinetics: recirculation, particle separation and negative mobility

open access: yes, 2014
We show that when particles are suspended in an electrolyte confined between corrugated charged surfaces, electrokinetic flows lead to a new set of phenomena such as particle separation, mixing for low-Reynolds micro- and nano-metric devices and negative

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

The relationship between biological function and teleology: Implications for biology education

open access: yesEvolution: Education and Outreach, 2020
This paper explicates the relationship between biological function and teleology by focusing not only on difference but also on conceptual overlap. By doing so, this paper is meant to increase awareness of the misleading potential of biological function ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
