Synthetic Biology: Engineering Living Systems from Biophysical Principles [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2017
Synthetic biology was founded as a biophysical discipline that sought explanations for the origins of life from chemical and physical first principles. Modern synthetic biology has been reinvented as an engineering discipline to design new organisms as well as to better understand fundamental biological mechanisms.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Engineering physical microenvironments to study innate immune cell biophysics

open access: yesAPL Bioengineering, 2022
Innate immunity forms the core of the human body's defense system against infection, injury, and foreign objects. It aims to maintain homeostasis by promoting inflammation and then initiating tissue repair, but it can also lead to disease when dysregulated.

Integrated and simultaneous mapping of blue carbon ecosystems by using tide-level, phenological, and biophysical features from optical and SAR images

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Earth Observations and Geoinformation
Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) are nature-based solutions critical for mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss. Accurate mapping of BCEs is fundamental to carbon accounting, maximizing their ecosystem service value, and informing conservation and ...

Investigating the Effect of Engine Lubricant Viscosity on Engine Friction and Fuel Economy of a Diesel Engine [PDF]

open access: yes
Fuel economy is affected, both by fuel and engine lubricant quality. Engine lubricant quality plays a vital role in reduction of fuel consumption by effective reduction of friction between the contact surfaces of engine parts (piston ring assembly ...

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.
