A biopsy is more than a biopsy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Internal Medicine, 1998
This issue of JGIM contains a review, by Alguire, about commonly performed skin-biopsy procedures that serves as a comprehensive reference for generalists.1 Generalists need to know more than biopsy technique, however, especially now that managed care is pressuring them to do more themselves and to refer less to consultants like dermatologists.

Final trial report of sentinel-node biopsy versus nodal observation in melanoma.

open access: yesNew England Journal of Medicine, 2014
BACKGROUND Sentinel-node biopsy, a minimally invasive procedure for regional melanoma staging, was evaluated in a phase 3 trial. METHODS We evaluated outcomes in 2001 patients with primary cutaneous melanomas randomly assigned to undergo wide excision ...

Time, the final frontier

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This article advocates integrating temporal dynamics into cancer research. Rather than relying on static snapshots, researchers should increasingly consider adopting dynamic methods—such as live imaging, temporal omics, and liquid biopsies—to track how tumors evolve over time.

Transcriptional profiles of circulating tumor cells reflect heterogeneity and treatment resistance in advanced prostate cancer

open access: yesJournal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research
Purpose New biomarkers for the detection and monitoring of aggressive variant prostate cancer (AVPC) including therapy-induced neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) are urgently needed, as measuring prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is not reliable in ...

Inferior vena cava/aorta diameter index in the assessment of the body fluid status – a comparative study of measurements performed by experienced and inexperienced examiners in a group of young adults

open access: yesJournal of Ultrasonography, 2014
The assessment of the body fluid status is one the most challenging tasks in clinical practice. Although there are many methods to assess the body fluid status of patients, none of them is fully satisfactory in contemporary medical sciences.

Mechanobiology and survival strategies of circulating tumor cells: a process towards the invasive and metastatic phenotype

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2023
Metastatic progression is the deadliest feature of cancer. Cancer cell growth, invasion, intravasation, circulation, arrest/adhesion and extravasation require specific mechanical properties to allow cell survival and the completion of the metastatic ...

MET and NF2 alterations confer primary and early resistance to first‐line alectinib treatment in ALK‐positive non‐small‐cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Alectinib resistance in ALK+ NSCLC depends on treatment sequence and EML4‐ALK variants. Variant 1 exhibited off‐target resistance after first‐line treatment, while variant 3 and later lines favored on‐target mutations. Early resistance involved off‐target alterations, like MET and NF2, while on‐target mutations emerged with prolonged therapy.

Exosomal miRNA profile as complementary tool in the diagnostic and prediction of treatment response in localized breast cancer under neoadjuvant chemotherapy

open access: yesBreast Cancer Research, 2019
Background Breast cancer patients under neoadjuvant chemotherapy includes a heterogeneous group of patients who eventually develop distal disease, not detectable by current methods.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Native Kidney Biopsy Complications.

open access: yesAmerican Society of Nephrology. Clinical Journal, 2020
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Native kidney biopsies are commonly performed in the diagnosis of acute kidney diseases and CKD. Because of the invasive nature of the procedure, bleeding-related complications are not uncommon. The National Institutes of Health,

Chemoresistome mapping in individual breast cancer patients unravels diversity in dynamic transcriptional adaptation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study used longitudinal transcriptomics and gene‐pattern classification to uncover patient‐specific mechanisms of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. Findings reveal preexisting drug‐tolerant states in primary tumors and diverse gene rewiring patterns across patients, converging on a few dysregulated functional modules. Despite receiving the
