Unveiling Patterns in Cetacean Strandings Along Southern Atlantic Iberia: Temporal and Spatial Trends, Seasonality, and Causes of Death

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT We compiled 46 years of cetacean strandings in the Algarve, Portugal, describing temporal–spatial patterns, size–sex structure, and causes of death (COD). We analyzed national records and years with a dedicated regional stranding network (SN) to assess annual/seasonal trends, spatial hotspots, and compare biometrics and COD.

The Toxic Effects of Environmental Domoic Acid Exposure on Humans and Marine Wildlife

open access: yesMarine Drugs
Biotoxins produced by harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a substantial global threat to ocean and human health. Domoic acid (DA) is one such biotoxin whose negative impacts are forecasted to increase with climate change and coastal development.

Addressing the Problem of Harmful Algal Blooms in Latin America and the Caribbean- A Regional Network for Early Warning and Response

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) constitute a worldwide problem, affecting aquatic ecosystems, public health and local economies. Supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency since 2009, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries, including Brazil,

Molecular detection of a potentially toxic diatom species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A few diatom species produce toxins that affect human and animal health. Among these, members of the Pseudo-nitzschia genus were the first diatoms unambiguously identified as producer of domoic acid, a neurotoxin affecting molluscan shell-fish, birds ...

Artificial Intelligence in Food Safety: A Tertiary Study

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Food safety remains a critical factor in preventing contaminated and hazardous products from reaching consumers. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and its capacity to deal with vast datasets has significantly enhanced food safety protocols, and a substantial number of primary and secondary studies have emerged at the intersection

Toxicological Assessment of D‐Allulose From a Novel One‐Step Fermentation Process Using Genetically Modified Escherichia coli: A 90‐Day Dietary Toxicity Study in Rats

open access: yesJournal of Toxicology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
D‐Allulose is a rare monosaccharide structurally similar to D‐fructose, characterized by low caloric content and relatively high sweetness. This study aimed to conduct a 90‐day oral toxicity test to systemically evaluate the potential toxicological effects of D‐allulose produced via a novel one‐step fermentation process using genetically engineered ...

Intraguild predation in sympatric seals and the effect on a declining population

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 12, Page 2572-2583, December 2025.
This study examined the prevalence, spatial extent, and temporal trends of grey seal intraguild predation (IGP). We demonstrated the utility of integrating disparate datasets to address conservation challenges and highlighted how IGP, while seemingly rare, can hold sympatric species in a predator‐pit and in small populations may contribute to declines.

The Continuing Saga of the Marine Polyether Biotoxins [PDF]

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, 2008
AbstractThe unprecedented structure of the marine natural product brevetoxin B was elucidated by the research group of Nakanishi and Clardy in 1981. The ladderlike molecular architecture of this fused polyether molecule, its potent toxicity, and fascinating voltage‐sensitive sodium channel based mechanism of action immediately captured the imagination ...
