Effect of forage type on swallowed bolus mass and a method for counting swallows in dairy cattle

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2023
: Dry matter intake (DMI) is a primary determinant of milk production in grazing dairy cows and an ability to measure the DMI of individual cows would allow herd managers to formulate supplementary rations that consider the amount of nutrients ingested ...

Increased vigilance of plains zebras (Equus quagga) in response to more bush coverage in a Kenyan savanna

open access: yesClimate Change Ecology, 2021
Climate change-induced bush encroachment into grasslands has profound impacts on herbivores in African grasslands through changing their food and water supplies and influencing their perception of predation risk, and thus modulating the trade-off between

An underwater Serengeti: Seagrass‐mediated effects on intake and cultivation grazing behavior of a marine megaherbivore

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
Populations of green turtles (Chelonia mydas), a megaherbivore that consumes seagrasses via cultivation grazing, are recovering worldwide. Information on plant‐mediated effects on herbivore foraging behavior is critical to understanding plant–herbivore ...

Behavioural Indicators of Intra- and Inter-Specific Competition: Sheep Co-Grazing with Guanaco in the Patagonian Steppe

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
In extensive livestock production, high densities may inhibit regulation processes, maintaining high levels of intraspecific competition over time. During competition, individuals typically modify their behaviours, particularly feeding and bite rates ...

Extreme and rapid bursts of functional adaptations shape bite force in amniotes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Adaptation is the fundamental driver of functional and biomechanical evolution. Accordingly, the states of biomechanical traits (absolute or relative trait values) have long been used as proxies for adaptations in response to direct selection.
