The impact of frailty syndrome on skeletal muscle histology: preventive effects of exercise

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Frailty syndrome exacerbates skeletal muscle degeneration via increased ECM deposition and myofiber loss. This study, using a murine model, demonstrates that endurance exercise attenuates these histopathological alterations, preserving muscle integrity. Findings support exercise as a viable strategy to counteract frailty‐induced musculoskeletal decline

Short peptide perturbs spermatogenesis via immune microenvironment dysregulation and mitochondrial imbalance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In the blood–testis barrier, occludin is crucial for tight junctions. This study demonstrates that occludin‐targeting short peptides disrupt junction integrity, inducing immune cell infiltration, tumor necrosis factor‐α/interleukin‐6 secretion and mitochondrial dysfunction, ultimately triggering apoptosis.

CNS Mitochondria‐Derived Vesicle in Blood: Potential Biomarkers for Brain Mitochondria Dysfunction

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's (PD). Our goal was to develop practical, noninvasive methods to assess mitochondrial status through the detection of mitochondria‐derived vesicles (MDVs).

Solubilization of Proteins in 2DE: An Outline [PDF]

open access: yesMethods in molecular biology (Clifton, N.J.) 519 (2009) 19-30, 2009
Protein solubilization for two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) has to break molecular interactions to separate the biological contents of the material of interest into isolated and intact polypeptides. This must be carried out in conditions compatible with the first dimension of 2DE, namely isoelectric focusing.

Commonly used anti–von Willebrand factor antibody for multimer analysis cross‐reacts with fibronectin, which is difficult to distinguish from von Willebrand factor

open access: yesResearch and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2021
Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a 500‐ to 15 000‐kDa multimeric protein circulating in the blood. When VWF has a higher molecular weight, its hemostatic activity is greater.

Blood Plasma Calorimetric Profiles of Women with Preeclampsia: Effect of Oxidative Stress

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2023
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disease with poor placentation and presents itself through hypertension and proteinuria. The disease is also associated with the oxidative modification of proteins in maternal blood plasma.

The Impact of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome Burden on Pain, Neuropathy Severity and Fiber Type

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Determine the association between diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) burden (number of MetS criteria fulfilled) and pain, neuropathy severity, and fiber type involvement in individuals with established polyneuropathy. Methods The Peripheral Neuropathy Research Registry was queried for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes ...

Peroxiredoxin III : a candidate for drug resistance to chemotherapy : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biochemistry at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The development of drug resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs is a serious obstacle in the successful treatment of cancer. New cancer drugs are continually being developed with the goal of increasing the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Addressing the needs of traumatic brain injury with clinical proteomics. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BackgroundNeurotrauma or injuries to the central nervous system (CNS) are a serious public health problem worldwide. Approximately 75% of all traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are concussions or other mild TBI (mTBI) forms.
