Use of C-reactive protein in pediatric patients with renal diseases

open access: yesRevista Electrónica Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta, 2017
Background: the use of C-reactive protein as an inflammatory marker in various conditions is part of novel studies in the field of many specialties such as cardiology and immunology. Objective: to assess the usefulness of C-reactive protein for the ...

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

A Relationship between the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome and the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology, 2009
ObjectivesThe erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a marker for inflammation, and it has been identified as a risk factor for atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the plasma ESR level

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and blood viscosity as modified by fat emulsions

open access: yes, 1960
The effect of lecithin and lecithin-free intravenous fat emulsions on erythrocyte sedimentation and blood viscosity was investigated. Lecithin-emulsified cottonseed oil markedly depressed erythrocyte sedimentation and increased blood viscosity of human ...

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

Simulation of the Separation of Homogeneous Whole Blood in a Spin-up Rotating Cylindrical Container [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
Centrifugal separation is a highly efficient technique for accelerating the sedimentation of blood constituents in a cylindrical container through high-speed spin-up rotation.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Separation of blood microsamples by exploiting sedimentation at the microscale

open access: yes, 2018
Microsample analysis is highly beneficial in blood-based testing where cutting-edge bioanalytical technologies enable the analysis of volumes down to a few tens of microliters.

The sample processing time interval as an influential factor in flow cytometry analysis of lymphocyte subsets

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2007
The objective of this paper is to propose a protocol to analyze blood samples in yellow fever 17DD vaccinated which developed serious adverse events. We investigated whether or not the time between sample collection and sample processing could interfere ...

Mutant NPM1 in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Initiation and Maintenance

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
NPM1 mutations drive acute myeloid leukemia by acting as neomorphic transcriptional regulators that cooperate with Menin–MLL and XPO1 to sustain HOX/MEIS1 expression and block differentiation. Targeting these mutant‐specific transcriptional dependencies provides a rational therapeutic strategy for NPM1‐mutated AML.
