A deep learning approach to 3D segmentation of brain vasculature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The segmentation of blood-vessels is an important preprocessing step for the quantitative analysis of brain vasculature. We approach the segmentation task for two-photon brain angiograms using a fully convolutional 3D deep neural network.Published ...

Cardiopulmonary Events of the Elderly (≥75 Years) during Clazosentan Therapy after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Retrospective Study from a Tertiary Stroke Center in Japan

open access: yesMedicina
Clazosentan has been shown to prevent vasospasm and reduce mortality in patients after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and has been approved for clinical use in Japan; however, its systemic events in the elderly (aged ≥ 75 years) have not been ...

Time, the final frontier

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This article advocates integrating temporal dynamics into cancer research. Rather than relying on static snapshots, researchers should increasingly consider adopting dynamic methods—such as live imaging, temporal omics, and liquid biopsies—to track how tumors evolve over time.

The RETA Benchmark for Retinal Vascular Tree Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Topological and geometrical analysis of retinal blood vessel is a cost-effective way for early detection of many common diseases. Meanwhile, automated vessel segmentation and vascular tree analysis are still lacking in terms of generalization capability. In this work, we construct a novel benchmark RETA with 81 labeled vessel masks aiming to facilitate

Interplay of integrins and selectins in metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here we review the role of integrins and their interplay with selectins in metastasis. The efficacy of integrin‐targeted therapies may be reduced in tumors where metastasis relies heavily on selectins. In certain tumors, integrins and selectins exhibit a synergistic interaction during intraperitoneal dissemination.

Diffusion MRI Fiber Tractography and Benzodiazepine SPECT Imaging for Assessing Neural Damage to the Language Centers in an Elderly Patient after Successful Reperfusion Therapy

open access: yesGeriatrics
Background: Intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy are the first-line reperfusion therapies for acute ischemic stroke. Here, we describe the utility of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fiber tractography and 123I-iomazenil ...

U-Net with Graph Based Smoothing Regularizer for Small Vessel Segmentation on Fundus Image [PDF]

open access: yesICONIP2019, 2020
The detection of retinal blood vessels, especially the changes of small vessel condition is the most important indicator to identify the vascular network of the human body. Existing techniques focused mainly on shape of the large vessels, which is not appropriate for the disconnected small and isolated vessels.

Inhibitor of DNA binding‐1 is a key regulator of cancer cell vasculogenic mimicry

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Elevated expression of transcriptional regulator inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1) promoted cancer cell‐mediated vasculogenic mimicry (VM) through regulation of pro‐angiogenic and pro‐cancerous genes (e.g. VE‐cadherin (CDH5), TIE2, MMP9, DKK1). Higher ID1 expression also increased metastases to the lung and the liver.

Phenotypic spectrum of the first Belgian MYBPC3 founder: a large multi-exon deletion with a varying phenotype

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
BackgroundVariants in the MYBPC3 gene are a frequent cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) but display a large phenotypic heterogeneity. Founder mutations are often believed to be more benign as they prevailed despite potential negative selection ...
