Anisotropic Shear Properties of Organic Interfaces in Bio‐composite Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel cantilever design enables direct probing of shear properties at single organic interfaces within biocomposite prismatic ultrastructures. By decoupling lateral and torsional shear responses, the method reveals isotropic behavior in Atrina vexillum and pronounced anisotropy in Unio pictorum.

Effects of light quality on reproduction, growth and pigment content of Gracilaria birdiae (Rhodophyta: Gracilariales)

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2015
Gracilaria species are the main source of agar worldwide. Since laboratory cultivation is an important means of sustaining such production, this study aimed to assess the influence of two fundamental strategies of physiological algae adjustment ...

The Natural Diet of Apocyclops panamensis at a Shrimp Farm on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
349. Gut contents of 1150 adults of Apocyclops panamensis were examined to obtain information on its feeding habits in extensive shrimp ponds during a 16-week period (10 June ~ 5 Sept. 1999).

Liquid Metals as Initiators of Free‐Radical Polymerization of Hydrogels: A Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gallium‐based liquid metals initiate free radical polymerization to form hydrogels without the use of toxic molecular initiators. In addition to initiating polymerization, they can act as crosslinkers, yielding softer, more extensible, and tougher hydrogels than those formed with conventional initiators.

LipoGels: Robust Self‐Lubricating Physically Cross‐Linked Alginate Hydrogels Embedded with Liposomes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Physically cross‐linked alginate hydrogels embedded with 1,2‐dipalmitoyl‐sn‐glycero‐3‐phosphocholine liposomes (LipoGels) are prepared under optimized conditions to avoid shrinkage and achieve structural uniformity. LipoGels demonstrate robust mechanical strength (Young's modulus ≈1 MPa), excellent lubrication (friction coefficient ≈0.021), and ...

Protochlorophyll(ide) in a Blue-Green Alga [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 1982
During growth under far-red (>650 nm) light, Anacystis nidulans accumulates protochlorophyllide to concentrations about one-tenth of the chlorophyll. From whole cell fluorescence spectra, protochlorophyll(ide) was identified also in another blue-green, and in a red, alga grown in far-red light.

A Review on MXene Terminations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Surface terminations play a decisive role in determining the properties of MXenes. Their coordination, composition and stoichiometry can be tuned both during synthesis and through post synthesis methods to tailor MXenes for optimum performance in applications. This review explores the present understanding of surface terminations.
