BNCT Project in Czechoslovakia
1989In Czechoslovakia, a multidisciplinary research group for BNCT of human brain gliomas has been constituted in 1980. Mercaptoborane compound has been synthesized suitable for clinical use. The configuration of a thermal neutron beam with appropriate parameters has been created using the 10 MW VVR-S research reactor and proved experimentally.

Spatial characterization of BNCT beams
Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 2004The space distribution of the epithermal neutron flux was determined for the epithermal neutron beams of several NCT facilities in USA (FCB at MIT), Europe (HFR at JRC, Petten; FiR at VTT, Espoo; LVR-15 at NRI, Rez) and Japan (JRR-4 at JAERI, Tokai).

A physical dosimetry intercomparison for BNCT
Medical Physics, 2002An intercomparison of physical dosimetry methods used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brookhaven National Laboratory was completed to enable retrospective analysis of BNCT trials. Measurements were performed under reference conditions pertinent to clinical irradiations at the epithermal neutron beam facility of the Brookhaven ...

Normalisation of prescribed dose in BNCT
Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2007Normalisation of prescribed dose in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is needed to facilitate combining clinical data from different centres in the world to help expedite development of the modality. The approach being pursued within the BNCT community is based upon improving precision in the measurement and specification of absorbed dose.

Optimization of the BNCT Filter
Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 2000The Czech Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) facility works by an epithermal neutron beam installed at the LVR-15 reactor at Rez near Prague. Several configurations of moderating and shielding materials have been designed in order to ensure appropriate parameters of the beam. The beam filter consists of cylindrical layers of Al, AlF3 and Ti.

Some portion of the radiation dose received by a patient during BNCT consists of primary and secondary gammas. The biological effect of that portion of the dose will depend upon the time history of the delivered dose. The well-known models for relating time-dose effects to clinical experience, principally those of Orton1 and Ellis2 are of questionable ...

Prescribing, Recording and Reporting of BNCT
2012In this chapter, recommendations for prescribing, recording and especially reporting of dose in BNCT are developed and discussed. The main goal of the authors was that these recommendations are coherent with the general rules of prescribing, recording and reporting of dose in conventional radiotherapy following international standards.

During any radiation therapy, the therapeutic tumor dose is limited by the tolerance of the surrounding normal tissue within the treatment volume. The short ranges of the products of the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction produced during boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) present an opportunity to increase the therapeutic ratio (tumor dose/normal tissue dose) to ...

The revival of BNCT over the last decade, stimulated the formation in 1987 of the European Collaboration group on BNCT. The multi-disciplinary nature of BNCT has drawn together groups of researchers from many European institutes who are now collaborating in an effort to achieve the implementation of BNCT in Europe at the earliest possible date.

Characterisation of the TAPIRO BNCT epithermal facility
Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2004A collimated epithermal beam for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) research has been designed and built at the TAPIRO fast research reactor. A complete experimental characterisation of the radiation field in the irradiation chamber has been performed, to verify agreement with IAEA requirements.
