INEL BNCT Program Directions with Respect to Clinical Trials of BNCT
1992The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory's Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (INEL/BNCT) Program was initially established in 1984 to provide a new improved, effective treatment for Glioblastoma Multiforme. To address this need, the Program was organized with four goals in mind: (1) develop BNCT as a more effective brain tumor treatment, (2) expand BNCT ...

Boron-containing nucleosides are attractive agents for BNCT1 because they may be (1) taken up selectively into tumors due to the high mitotic rate of tumor cells vs. normal cells, (2) intracellularly converted to the corresponding nucleotides through phosphorylation by appropriate enzymes such as TK1 or dCK, and (3) possibly incorporated into tumor ...

Neuropathological postmortem evaluation of BNCT for GBM
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, 2007Thirty patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) were treated by boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) at the Studsvik facility in Sweden, in a clinical trial exploring a procedure in which 900 mg p-boronophenylalanine (BPA) per kilo body weight was infused in 6 h.The present study was designed to assess tumor efficacy and radiation damage to the ...

If BNCT were performed in a single, unique facility and if its science were unique, concepts and terminology specific to this new modality could be developed. However, BNCT is a form of radiation therapy. To benefit from the vast accumulated experience with all types of radiation therapy and to ensure a common understanding and allow a fruitful ...

Semiconductor Dosimetry in BNCT
2001The problems of neutron and gamma dosimetry in epithermal Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is quite complicated due to the wide epithermal neutron spectra 0.5—10 keV, fast neutron contribution up to 14MeV and photons from the reactor and induced in the phantom due to H(n,γ)H reaction. Furthermore, contributions from high LET products arising from B-

This chapter is based on a shortened version of the investigators brochures from the EORTC clinical trials 11001 and 11011 concerning the boron compounds sodium borocaptate (BSH) and boronophenylalanine (BPA). It summarizes essential information that might be asked by regulatory authorities. The intention of this chapter is to support and to facilitate

A phase I BNCT trial in glioblastoma started at the Finnish BNCT facility in May 1999. The aim of the present work was to verify the doses calculated in treatment planning and estimate the whole body dose on the basis of neutron fluence and gamma dose measurements in vivo and in a whole body phantom.

Boron Analysis and Boron Imaging in BNCT
2012Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) strongly depends on the selective uptake of 10B in tumor cells and on the 10B distribution inside single cells. The chemical properties of boron and the need to discriminate different isotopes make the investigation of the concentration and distribution of 10B a challenging task.
