INEL BNCT Program Directions with Respect to Clinical Trials of BNCT
1992The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory's Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (INEL/BNCT) Program was initially established in 1984 to provide a new improved, effective treatment for Glioblastoma Multiforme. To address this need, the Program was organized with four goals in mind: (1) develop BNCT as a more effective brain tumor treatment, (2) expand BNCT ...

Semiconductor Dosimetry in BNCT
2001The problems of neutron and gamma dosimetry in epithermal Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is quite complicated due to the wide epithermal neutron spectra 0.5—10 keV, fast neutron contribution up to 14MeV and photons from the reactor and induced in the phantom due to H(n,γ)H reaction. Furthermore, contributions from high LET products arising from B-

Boron neutron capture therapy has been used in Japan for a number of decades for the treatment of glioblastoma and since around a decade for the treatment of melanoma. In both cases, therapy is confined to the surface of the exposed tissue, as thermal neutrons are used. In the glioma treatment, intraoperative BNCT is therefore carried out.

A phase I BNCT trial in glioblastoma started at the Finnish BNCT facility in May 1999. The aim of the present work was to verify the doses calculated in treatment planning and estimate the whole body dose on the basis of neutron fluence and gamma dose measurements in vivo and in a whole body phantom.
