Interaction of Skatole and Androstenone in the Olfactory Perception of Boar Taint [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2016
This study analyzed odor-odor interactions of two malodorous volatile substances, androstenone and skatole, that may accumulate in fat and meat of uncastrated male (boar) pigs. Therefore, fat samples were collected from 1000+ entire male pig carcasses for sensory evaluation and quantification of boar taint compounds using gas chromatography-mass ...

Disentangling Multitrophic Interactions: How Vegetation Cover, Wild Boar, Deer, and Predators Shape Rodents Activity and Acorn Dispersal

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Vegetation cover promotes rodent activity and acorn dispersal, while wild boars exert a direct negative effect on mice. Conversely, deer and predators displayed no significant impact on rodent behavior. These results identify wild boars as the main disruptors of rodent‐mediated forest regeneration.

Field experience with surgical castration with anaesthesia, analgesia, immunocastration and production of entire male pigs: performance, carcass traits and boar taint prevalence

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
Male piglets are castrated to reduce boar taint and also to reduce aggressive and sexual behaviour. However, the procedure as traditionally performed is painful and negatively affects performance.

Seminal Plasma Exosomal miRNA Profiling Reveals hsa‐miR‐7‐5p as a Key Regulator of Sperm Motility in Asthenozoospermia

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Asthenozoospermia is a significant contributing factor to male infertility. Accumulating evidence indicates that impaired sperm motility is closely linked to dysregulated microRNA expression during spermatogenesis. Seminal plasma exosomes are enriched with diverse microRNAs, which play pivotal roles in modulating sperm motility, the

Pig meat quality from entire males

open access: yesAnimal, 2009
This paper constitutes an updated review of the production and meat quality aspects of rearing entire male pigs. Since a major obstacle in rearing entire males is the incidence of boar taint, possible methods for detection are also summarised.

Male Reproductive Organ Weight: Criteria for Detection of Androstenone-Positive Carcasses in Immunocastrated and Entire Male Pigs

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
Immunocastration and rearing of entire males (EMs) are sustainable alternatives to surgical castration. However, these animal carcasses have variable risk of boar taint and should be identified at the slaughter line.

Clinical Burden of Symptomatic HEV‐3 Infection in Southern Spain

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Clinical burden of symptomatic HEV‐3 infection in southern Spain. Between 2022 and 2025, 1124 patients with acute hepatitis, defined as ALT ≥ 3 times the upper limit of normal and negative screening for HAV, HBV, HCV, EBV and CMV, were evaluated in Andalusia.

Investigating the Dietary, Economic, and Social Practices of a Neolithic Funnel Beaker Community in Wanna, Germany, Through Raw Material and Organic Residue Analyses of Pottery

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study details the analysis of an assemblage of Funnel Beaker pottery from Wanna in Northern Germany investigated using petrographic, geochemical, and organic residue analyses. The analyses revealed specialized production of pottery vessels for funerary contexts, but that domestic and funerary pottery were used intensively to process ...

Impact of increasing levels of condensed tannins from sainfoin in the grower–finisher diets of entire male pigs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality

open access: yesAnimal, 2021
Sainfoin is a protein-rich legume with an ideal amino acid profile and therefore could partly replace soybeans in the diets of growing pigs. However, sainfoin also contains a non-negligible amount of condensed tannins (CTs), which can act as ...

Synergistic Benefits of Butyric Acid and Resistant Potato Starch on Growth and Gut Health in Weaned Pigs

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Newly‐weaned piglets face challenges such as reduced feed intake, impaired gut function, and susceptibility to post‐weaning diarrhoea, increasing the need for dietary strategies that support gut health and growth. This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with butyric acid (BA), resistant potato starch (PS), and their ...
