The standard test procedures as listed by ASTM, BSI and other official bodies are essentially for testing adhesives and surface treatments rather than joints. Unfortunately, most if not all of these standard tests consist of joints in which the adhesive stresses are far from uniform.

Analysis of composite bonded joints
Fibre Science and Technology, 1982Abstract In this paper a special 6-node isoparametric element is developed for the adhesive layer of a bonded joint. The adhesive layer is assumed to be relatively thin and behaves elastically as simple tension-compression springs and shear springs connecting the adherends.

Shaping of adherends in bonded joints
International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1978A method of analysis of adhesive bonded joints with arbitrary adherend shapes is developed and applied to their design for efficient load transfer. The formulation of the simplified physical model is essentially one dimensional. An efficient numerical procedure is developed and its applicability is demonstrated.

Structural Joints—Bolted and Bonded
2010Abstract This chapter discusses the use of mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding, the primary methods for joining polymer matrix composites. It describes and analyzes the basic types of mechanically fastened joints, including single-hole and multirow bolted composite joints.

Research studies have been conducted in all industry sectors on the design of bonded joints and the influence of this on joint strength and durability. Many have found their way into published texts for engineers. Lack of space prevents any more than a brief summary of such a large topic.

Bonded-bolted composite joints
Journal of Aircraft, 1984Various aspects of the combination of adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening for fibrous composite structures are considered. The factors accounted for in the theories are explained and the source of the complete derivations is given. Analyses of undamaged structures show that, because the adhesive bond load path is so much stiffer than the load ...
