High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Nondestructive Testing of Welded Composite Metal Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate welded steel–steel composite metal foam (CMF) joints of two density classes. It reports variation in postweld spatial void distribution and correlates it to weld‐induced changes, mechanical performance, and failure within welded CMF panels.

The Effects of Adding Attachments in Conventional Composite Hybrid Joints on Tensile Strength [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Mechanical fasteners are commonly used in today’s composite aircraft adhesive joints. The primary purpose for using mechanical fasteners was to provide redundancy to the adhesive joints because of the uncertainties associated with an adhesive only joint.

Encyclopedia of 2D β′‐In2Se3 Growth Using Chemical Vapor Deposition: The Effects of Synthesis Parameters Onto Material Quality

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A distinct semi‐confined inner‐tube chemical vapor deposition geometry enables reproducible, large‐area growth of phase‐pure 2D β′‐In2Se3 from InI + Se precursors. Engineering local vapor transport and optimizing precursor delivery and temperature–time conditions yield uniform continuous films.

Analytical and numerical study concerning the behaviour of single-sided bonded patch repairs [PDF]

open access: yesINCAS Bulletin, 2011
Adhesive bonded joints are used in the assembling of structural parts, especially of those which are made from dissimilar materials. Lightweight fibre reinforced polymer composites and other adhesive bonded components represent a major proportion of a ...

Designing for tapers and defects in FRP-strengthened metallic structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Adhesively bonded FRP strengthening for metallic structures relies critically on the adhesive joint between the FRP and the metal. Current best-practice in design allows the distribution of shear and peel stress along the adhesive connection to be ...

From Shear to Sound: Mechanics–Acoustics Mapping of TPMS Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices are mapped across mechanical and acoustic performance, revealing that descriptors validated in compression fail under shear. First‐time comparison with trusses included. A transition from porous to resonance‐driven absorption emerges at 25% density.

High rate loading of hybrid joints in a Split Hopkinson Tension Bar

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
Bonded joints are nowadays seen as one of the preferred joining methods in aerospace applications. However, the difficulty in certifying bond strength and the relatively low energy absorption capability of the joint are barriers to widespread adoption ...
