BMP antagonist CHRDL2 enhances the cancer stem‐cell phenotype and increases chemotherapy resistance in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Overexpression of CHRDL2 in colon cancer cells makes them more stem‐like and resistant to chemo‐ and radiotherapy. CHRDL2‐high cells have upregulation of the WNT pathway, genes involved in the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). This leads to quicker repair of damaged DNA and more cell migration.

Bone Age Assessment Based on Rank-Monotonicity Enhanced Ranking CNN

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Skeletal bone age assessment based on hand x-ray is widely used in many fields. There is an urgent need for automated method to alleviate manual labor and address the problem of intra- and inter-observer variability.

Simultaneous inhibition of TRIM24 and TRIM28 sensitises prostate cancer cells to antiandrogen therapy, decreasing VEGF signalling and angiogenesis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TRIM24 and TRIM28 are androgen receptor (AR) coregulators which exhibit increased expression with cancer progression. Both TRIM24 and TRIM28 combine to influence the response of castrate‐resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) cells to AR inhibitors by mediating AR signalling, regulation of MYC and upregulating VEGF to promote angiogenesis. Castrate‐resistant

Aging mechanisms in bone

open access: yesBoneKEy Reports, 2012
Advancing age and loss of bone mass and strength are closely linked. Elevated osteoblast and osteocyte apoptosis and decreased osteoblast number characterize the age-related skeletal changes in humans and rodents. Similar to other tissues, oxidative stress increases in bone with age.

Inflammation, ageing, and bone regeneration

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Translation, 2017
Bone healing involves complex biological pathways and interactions among various cell types and microenvironments. Among them, the monocyte-macrophage-osteoclast line-age and the mesenchymal stem cell-osteoblast lineage are critical, in addition to an initial inflammatory microenvironment.

Manejo farmacológico da baixa estatura: o papel dos inibidores da aromatase Pharmacological management of children with short stature: the role of aromatase inhibitors

Cytomegalovirus infection is common in prostate cancer and antiviral therapies inhibit progression in disease models

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Human cytomegalovirus infection is common in normal prostate epithelium, prostate tumor tissue, and prostate cancer cell lines. CMV promotes cell survival, proliferation, and androgen receptor signaling. Anti‐CMV pharmaceutical compounds in clinical use inhibited cell expansion in prostate cancer models in vitro and in vivo, motivating investigation ...

Applying Deep Learning in Medical Images: The Case of Bone Age Estimation

open access: yesHealthcare Informatics Research, 2018
Objectives A diagnostic need often arises to estimate bone age from X-ray images of the hand of a subject during the growth period. Together with measured physical height, such information may be used as indicators for the height growth prognosis of the ...

Endoglin mediates the tumor‐ and metastasis‐promoting traits of stromal myofibroblasts in human breast carcinomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Carcinoma‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in tumors influence cancer progression. We identified endoglin (ENG) as a key factor in TGF‐β signaling in myofibroblastic CAFs (myCAFs), linked to poor breast cancer outcomes. Inhibiting ENG on myCAFs suppressed the TGF‐β‐Smad2/3 pathway, reducing primary tumor growth and metastasis.
