The ultrahistology of bone formation

Archives of Oral Biology, 1961
Abstract The palates of 1 day old mice were fixed in aqueous osmium tetraoxide and some were stained with alcoholic phosphotungstic acid. Thin sections were stained and demineralized in aqueous phosphotungstic acid and/or stained in uranyl acetate, or were examined without staining.

Bone formation in organ cultures of bone marrow

Cell and Tissue Research, 1987
Bone formation in organ cultures of intact marrow fragments from mouse is described. Marrow explants were cultured on the top surface of a millipore filter at a gas-liquid interface. Observations with both light- and electron microscopes demonstrated the formation of a well-organised trabecular matrix lined with osteoblast-like cells.

Bone Formation in Achondroplasia

1988
In achondroplasia bone formation is severely stunted in the epiphyseal plates of the long bones; it is normal in the flat bones of the skull and in the periosteum, and it is excessive at the traction epiphysis (3,4).

Bone-alkaline phosphatase as indicator of bone formation

Clinica Chimica Acta, 1991
Bone-alkaline phosphatase was determined in patients at risk of osteoporosis due to treatment with oral corticosteroids, and in patients at risk of increased bone synthesis because of treatment with cyclosporin. Both a significant decrease of bone-alkaline phosphatase during corticosteroid treatment, and a significant increase of bone-alkaline ...

[Bone Replacement and Bone Formation].

Zeitschrift fur Orthopadie und Unfallchirurgie, 2020
Autologous cancellous bone grafting remains the gold standard in the treatment of bone defects as it meets all requirements (osteoinduction, osteoconduction, osteointegration). Over time, bone replacement materials will become increasingly important in orthopedics and trauma surgery.

Coupling bone degradation to formation

Nature Medicine, 2009
To maintain skeletal integrity and prevent fractures, degradation and rebuilding of bone must occur in synchrony. Transforming growth factor-β1 is now found to coordinate this restructuring process: the molecule is released during bone degradation and stimulates bone rebuilding (pages 757–765).

Space Flight and Bone Formation

Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik, 2004
AbstractMajor physiological changes which occur during spaceflight include bone loss, muscle atrophy, cardiovascular and immune response alterations. When trying to determine the reason why bone loss occurs during spaceflight, one must remember that all these other changes in physiology and metabolism may also have impact on the skeletal system.
