Metastatic colorectal carcinoma initially diagnosed by bone marrow biopsy: a case report and literature review

open access: yesJournal of the Egyptian National Cancer Institute, 2020
Background Colorectal carcinoma still represents a global health burden despite the advances in its management. The most common sites of distant metastasis from colorectal carcinoma are hepatic and pulmonary metastases while metastases are rarely ...

Bone marrow adipocytes and lung cancer bone metastasis: unraveling the role of adipokines in the tumor microenvironment

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
Bone is a common site of metastasis for lung cancer. The “seed and soil” hypothesis suggests that the bone marrow microenvironment (“soil”) may provide a conducive survival environment for metastasizing tumor cells (“seeds”).

DNA Barcoding Reveals Habitual Clonal Dominance of Myeloma Plasma Cells in the Bone Marrow Microenvironment

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2017
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy resulting from the uncontrolled proliferation of antibody-producing plasma cells in the bone marrow. At diagnosis, independent plasma cell tumors are found throughout the skeleton.

Lorlatinib‐Containing Therapy for MYCN‐Amplified, ALK‐Mutated Neuroblastoma With Bulky Leptomeningeal Relapse: A Case Report

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Central nervous system (CNS) relapse of neuroblastoma carries a poor prognosis, and craniospinal irradiation (CSI) poses substantial long‐term toxicity in young children. We report a toddler with MYCN‐amplified neuroblastoma harboring somatic ALK R1275Q who developed extensive leptomeningeal relapse with paraplegia.

Bone marrow endosteum in homeostasis and metastasis

open access: yesOpen Biology
The endosteum is a thin layer of connective tissue lining the inner surfaces of bones adjoining the medullary cavity. The endosteum houses a variety of cells crucial for bone growth, repair and remodelling, including bone-forming osteoblasts, bone-resorbing osteoclasts and their precursor cells.

Safety of Daprodustat for the Treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease Anemia: Final Analysis of a Multicenter Postmarketing Surveillance Study in Japan

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction This final analysis of a multicenter, prospective postmarketing surveillance study evaluated the safety of daprodustat in patients with chronic kidney disease anemia in routine clinical practice in Japan. Methods Patients who initiated daprodustat between September 2020 and July 2022 were registered.

Morphological and Immunophenotypical Changes of Human Bone Marrow Adipocytes in Marrow Metastasis and Myelofibrosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2022
The bone marrow adipose tissue constitutes more than two-thirds of the bone marrow volume in adult life and is known to have unique metabolic and functional properties. In neoplastic disorders, bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) contribute to create a favorable microenvironment to survival and proliferation of cancer cells.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Osteoblasts and osteoclasts: an important switch of tumour cell dormancy during bone metastasis

open access: yesJournal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research, 2022
Bone metastasis occurs when tumour cells dissociate from primary tumours, enter the circulation (circulating tumour cells, CTCs), and colonize sites in bone (disseminated tumour cells, DTCs).

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...
