Distinct 5' UTR Requirements for Translation of the Bicistronic X/P mRNA Among Avian Orthobornaviruses. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiol Immunol
ABSTRACT Orthobornaviruses express X and the phosphoprotein (P) from a bicistronic X/P mRNA, and these proteins regulate polymerase activity. In mammalian orthobornaviruses, the 5′ untranslated region (5′ UTR) of the X/P mRNA controls the translational balance between X and P and thereby promotes efficient replication.

No evidence for natural selection on endogenous borna-like nucleoprotein elements after the divergence of Old World and New World monkeys. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Endogenous Borna-like nucleoprotein (EBLNs) elements were recently discovered as non-retroviral RNA virus elements derived from bornavirus in the genomes of various animals.

Active Case Finding of Current Bornavirus Infections in Human Encephalitis Cases of Unknown Etiology, Germany, 2018–2020

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2021
Human bornavirus encephalitis is a severe and often fatal infection caused by variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) and Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1).

Prominent Efficacy of Amantadine against Human Borna Disease Virus Infection In Vitro and In Vivo. Comment on Fink et al. Amantadine Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 In Vitro. Viruses 2021, 13, 539

open access: yesViruses, 2022
Amantadine (1-amino-adamantane) is a versatile antiviral compound which has been licensed for decades against influenza viruses. During the Corona pandemic, its effect to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 in vitro has been investigated.

Genomic and Micro-Evolutionary Features of Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (Variegated Squirrel Bornavirus 1, VSBV-1)

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (VSBV-1) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen discovered in several exotic squirrel species and associated with fatal human encephalitis. The dynamics of VSBV-1 spread and evolution in its presumed natural hosts are unknown. Here,

Serological Surveillance and Risk Factor Analysis for Parrot Bornavirus in Taiwan. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis
Parrots are traded globally and pose a substantial risk for disease transmission involving parrot‐specific pathogens. Parrot bornavirus (PaBV) belongs to the Bornaviridae family and encompasses two clades: alphapsittaciforme (PaBV‐1 to ‐4, PaBV‐7, and ‐8) and betapsittaciforme (PaBV‐5 and PaBV‐6). These clades cause proventricular dilatation disease, a

Antiviral treatment perspective against Borna disease virus 1 infection in major depression: a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial

open access: yesBMC Pharmacology and Toxicology, 2020
Background Whether Borna disease virus (BDV-1) is a human pathogen remained controversial until recent encephalitis cases showed BDV-1 infection could even be deadly. This called to mind previous evidence for an infectious contribution of BDV-1 to mental
