A Brazilian glycoprotein E-negative bovine herpesvirus type 1.2a (BHV-1.2a) mutant is attenuated for cattle and induces protection against wild-type virus challenge

open access: yes, 2002
The authors previously reported the construction of a glycoprotein E-deleted (gE-) mutant of bovine herpesvirus type 1.2a (BHV-1.2a). This mutant, 265gE-, was designed as a vaccinal strain for differential vaccines, allowing the distinction between ...

Neurological disorder in cattle associated with bovine herpesvirus 4 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A nested PCR assay was used to diagnose bovine encephalitis through herpesviruses including bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5), bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), Aujeszky's disease virus (SHV-1), and ovine herpesvirus 2 (OHV-2) in 14 fragments of central nervous ...

Environmental DNA Biosurveillance of Chelonid Herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) in Endangered Sea Turtles Around Singapore

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
This study explores the application of environmental DNA sampling for chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) surveillance in endangered sea turtles around Singapore. We demonstrate the direct detection of ChHV5 from seawater, and the feasibility of sediment‐based ChHV5 detection using a spike‐and‐recovery experiment.

Rapid Fluorescence Detection of in Situ Hybridization with Biotinylated Bovine Herpesvirus-1 DNA Probes

open access: yes, 1989
The use of biotinylated DNA hybridization probes for clinical detection of bovine herpesvirus-1 was investigated. Biotinylated DNA hybridization probes were prepared from bovine herpesvirus-1 DNA purified from infected cell cultures.

A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of the Epidemiology of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Infection in Dairy Cattle in Ethiopia

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
This systematic review and meta‐analysis summarise the epidemiology of bovine herpesvirus‐1 (BoHV‐1) infection in dairy cattle in Ethiopia. Analysis of 9 studies involving 5078 cattle revealed a high pooled seroprevalence of 46.02%, with higher estimates from c‐ELISA and an increasing temporal trend from 2018 to 2025.

Expression of Bovine Interleukin-1β in a Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Vector:In VitroAnalysis

open access: yesVirology, 1996
In order to evaluate whether bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) could be used as a live viral vector for the expression of cytokines, we constructed a recombinant BHV-1 expressing bovine interleukin-1 beta (boIL-1 beta). The boIL-1 beta coding sequence, corresponding to the cleaved mature product, was fused with the BHV-1 glycoprotein C (gC) signal peptide ...

Proteomic analysis of pathogenic and attenuated alcelaphine herpesvirus 1

open access: yes, 2008
The gammaherpesvirus alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1) causes malignant catarrhal fever in susceptible ungulates but infects its natural host, wildebeest, without obvious clinical signs.

Glycoprotein B of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Binds Heparin

open access: yes, 1995
Many members of the herpesvirus family have been shown to bind heparan sulfate on the surface of target cells. A previous report on bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) glycoprotein interactions indicated that only gC bound to heparin-agarose columns.

Cytomegalovirus replicon-based regulation of gene expression in vitro and in vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
There is increasing evidence for a connection between DNA replication and the expression of adjacent genes. Therefore, this study addressed the question of whether a herpesvirus origin of replication can be used to activate or increase the expression of ...

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 marker vaccine induces cross-protection against bubaline herpesvirus type 1 in water buffalo

open access: yes, 2014
Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) are susceptible to bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) and a species-specific herpesvirus, bubaline herpesvirus type 1 (BuHV-1).
