Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Box Beam Strengthened with CFRP U-Wrap Strips Under Torsion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The present study focuses on the torsional strengthening behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) box section beams that are widely used in bridges. Four RC box beams were fabricated, and three of them were wrapped by carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Overall buckling of lightweight stiffened panels using an adapted orthotropic plate method

open access: yes, 2015
The ultimate longitudinal bending strength of thin plated steel structures such as box girder bridges and ship hulls can be determined using an incremental–iterative procedure known as the Smith progressive collapse method.

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Convolution of multifractals and the local magnetization in a random field Ising chain

open access: yes, 2001
The local magnetization in the one-dimensional random-field Ising model is essentially the sum of two effective fields with multifractal probability measure. The probability measure of the local magnetization is thus the convolution of two multifractals.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Experimental and numerical investigation of the flexural behavior of CFRP box girders

open access: yesAdvanced Composites Letters, 2019
The advantages of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) box girders include good bending resistance, lightweight and high strength. Therefore, they are widely used in aerospace, rail transit, and other fields.

Dosage effect of superplasticizer on self-compacting concrete: correlation between rheology and strength

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2019
This study presents the relationship between the rheology and the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The concrete mixes contained eight different dosages of superplasticizer.

Turning Statistical Physics Models Into Materials Design Engines

open access: yes, 2015
Despite the success statistical physics has enjoyed at predicting the properties of materials for given parameters, the inverse problem, identifying which material parameters produce given, desired properties, is only beginning to be addressed. Recently,

Large scale environmental bias of the QSO line of sight proximity effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We analyse the proximity zone of the intergalactic matter around high-redshift quasars in a cosmological environment. In a box of 64 h-1 Mpc base length we employ dark matter only simulations.
