Brake Dynamometer Measurement of Airborne Brake Wear Debris

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2002
<div class="htmlview paragraph">In order to assess the amount of airborne particulate matter (PM) attributable to vehicle disk brakes, a system was devised for collecting brake wear debris on a laboratory brake dynamometer. The brake dynamometer test hardware was enclosed and vented through a duct in which the airflow was controlled to ensure ...

Influence of Pads and Brake Disc wear on Brake Squeal Noise

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2020
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The present work aims to investigate the influence of wear of the pads and brake disc on the brake squeal behavior with the help of the Finite Element tool. Brake discs basically work by the pressure of the brake pads against a rotating disc. The friction between the pads and the

Automotive brake wear: a review

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2017
Road transport systems generate toxic particulate matter (PM) when in motion, that ultimately finds its way to the atmosphere. The PM produced by road transport systems can be broadly classified as exhaust and non-exhaust emissions. Exhaust emission is primarily due to product of combustion, as is the case of internal combustion engines and the PM is ...

Study of Brake Wear Particle Emissions: Impact of Braking and Cruising Conditions

Environmental Science & Technology, 2019
A novel measurement setup is designed, constructed, and validated by theoretical simulations and by experiments enabling sensitive and loss-free brake particle emission investigations. With the goal to simulate realistic driving, a 3 h subsection of the Los Angeles City Traffic (LACT) cycle is selected as test cycle.

A Brake Pad Wear Control Algorithm for Electronic Brake System

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
A brake pad wear control algorithm used under uncritical braking conditions is proposed to reduce the difference in brake pad wear between the front and rear axles caused by the difference in braking force and the type of brake. The algorithm regulates the distribution of braking force within the limits of certain braking regulations according to the ...

Investigation of Influences on Brake Pad Wear

SAE International Journal of Advances and Current Practices in Mobility, 2020
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">To date, no generally valid statements can be made about the service life of brake pads, which may be due to factors such as driving style, the friction material used or the varying vehicle weight. While dynamic friction models including friction history are already established [&

Friction and wear of brake systems

Forschung im Ingenieurwesen, 2001
The contact area in brake systems shows characteristic structures. With respect to wear an equilibrium of flow of growing and destruction of hard patches is to be found on the contact surface. These patches modulate the friction coefficient of the brake system.

Regenerative braking system effectively reduces the formation of brake wear particles

Journal of Hazardous Materials
Brake wear particles (BWPs) are considered one of the most significant non-exhaust particle emission sources from motor vehicles. Previous studies have primarily focused on BWPs from conventional fuel vehicles (CFVs), with limited research available on BWPs from new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Toxicity of the Airborne Brake Wear Debris

SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing, 2016
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Particulate air pollution from road traffic currently represents significant environmental and health issue. Attention is also paid to the “non-exhaust pollution sources,” which includes brake wear debris.

Wear performance and wear debris of semimetallic automotive brake materials

Wear, 2010
Wear performance of automotive brake material is addressed and debris collected after brake dynamometer test and after ball-milling of identical semimetallic friction lining is characterized using a combination of analytical techniques. The differences between dynamometer wear debris and ball-milled samples are demonstrated.
