Semisynthesis of S-Desoxybrevetoxin-B2 and Brevetoxin-B2, and Assessment of Their Acute Toxicities

open access: yes, 2016
Brevetoxins are neurotoxins associated with blooms of marine algae such as Karenia brevis and can accumulate in the marine food chain, causing intoxication of marine animals and people consuming seafood.

Opinion of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) on the risks to human health associated with the proliferation of Ostreopsis spp. on the Basque coast

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 3, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract In France, the presence of marine microalgae of the genus Ostreopsis has been identified repeatedly on the Mediterranean coast for several years, whereas on the French Basque coasts its presence is much more recent. In the summers of 2021 and 2022, major Ostreopsis flowering episodes were reported on the Basque coast, resulting in several ...

Further Insights into Brevetoxin Metabolism by de Novo Radiolabeling

open access: yesToxins, 2014
The toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, responsible for early harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico, produces many secondary metabolites, including potent neurotoxins called brevetoxins (PbTx).

Metabolomics Approach to Reveal the Effects of Ocean Acidification on the Toxicity of Harmful Microalgae: A Review of the Literature

open access: yesAppliedChem, 2023
Climate change has been associated with intensified harmful algal blooms (HABs). Some harmful microalgae produce toxins that accumulate in food webs, adversely affecting the environment, public health and economy.

Impact of Hurricane Ian (2022) on Karenia brevis Bloom on the West Florida Shelf

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 6, 28 March 2025.
Abstract Blooms of toxigenic Karenia brevis are a major concern to public health and marine ecosystems on the West Florida Shelf. Hurricanes and tropical storms can discharge huge amounts of terrestrial nutrients into coastal oceans over a short time and have been linked to large plankton blooms, but the underlying mechanisms for the bloom generation ...

HABs Karenia brevis and Pseudo-nitzschia pre- and post-Hurricane Michael

open access: yesJournal of Water and Health, 2023
Increased occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HAB) in the Gulf of Mexico, and even worldwide, yield concern for increases in brevetoxin exposure leading to respiratory illness or even death, highlighting the need for extensive scientific research and ...

Effectors of thioredoxin reductase: Brevetoxins and manumycin-A

open access: yesComparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2019
The activities of two effectors, brevetoxin (PbTx) and manumycin-A (Man-A), of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) have been evaluated against a series of fourteen TrxR orthologs originating from mammals, insects and protists and several mutants. Man-A, a molecule with numerous electrophilic sites, forms a covalent adduct with most selenocystine (Sec ...

Identification of a Rapid Detoxification Mechanism for Brevetoxin in Rats [PDF]

open access: yesToxicological Sciences, 2005
We examined detoxification of brevetoxin in rats through metabolic activities and key elimination routes by analyzing samples from individual rats exposed to two brevetoxin congeners (PbTx-2 and PbTx-3). Brevetoxins were detected by radioimmunoassay in methanolic extracts of blood within 1 h post intraperitoneal (ip) administration.

Fish Sludge as Feed in Circular Bioproduction: Overview of Biological and Chemical Hazards in Fish Sludge and Their Potential Fate via Ingestion by Invertebrates

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
This review provides knowledge of the biosecurity risks of using fish sludge to produce novel feed ingredients from low‐trophic, extractive animal species in circular value chains. The review includes nutritional composition, sludge treatment practices, EU regulations, and the fate of microbial and chemical hazards contained in sludge till raw ...

Total Synthesis of Brevetoxin-B

open access: yes, 2016
Brevetoxin-B (BTX-B), produced by the red tide organism, Gymnodium breve Davis, is the first member of marine polycyclic ethers to be structurally elucidated and one of the most potent neurotoxins. The structural feature is a trans-fused polycyclic ether
