Brevetoxins: unique polyether dinoflagellate toxins
The FASEB Journal, 1989Brevetoxins are lipid‐soluble polyether marine toxins of unique structure and pharmacological function. Toxins are active in vivo in the nanomolar to picomolar concentration range and in vitro in isolated neuromuscular or giant axon preparations and in single‐cell or subcellular model systems.

Distribution and elimination of brevetoxin PbTx-3 in rats
Toxicon, 1990After i.v. administration, [3H]PbTx-3 was rapidly cleared from the blood; less than 10% remained after 1 min. Within 30 min, radiolabel distributed to skeletal muscle (69.5%), liver (18.0%), and intestinal tract (8.0%). Over 24 hr, radiolabel decreased in muscle, remained constant in liver, and increased in the intestinal tract and feces.

Brevetoxin binding: molecular pharmacology versus immunoassay
Toxicon, 1988Brevetoxin PbTx-3 isolated from Florida's red tide dinoflagellate Ptychodiscus brevis has been produced recently in tritiated form by reductive tritiation of brevetoxin PbTx-2. Tritiated PbTx-3 has been used as a specific probe in competitive radioimmunoassays developed to detect brevetoxins in food sources, and this probe has also been utilized to ...

Brevetoxins (BTXs) are potent marine toxins produced by certain microalgae during harmful algal blooms (HABs). These lipophilic polyether compounds, notably PbTx-1 and PbTx-2, primarily affect seafood safety by bioaccumulating in filter-feeding shellfish and finfish.

Tetrahedron, 1998
Abstract A new brevetoxin analog, brevetoxin B2 (BTXB2), was isolated from greenshell mussels, Perna canaliculus, collected at the time of the neurotoxic shellfish poisoning incident in New Zealand. The structure was elucidated based on NMR, CAD FAB MS/MS, and chemical degradation experiments.

[Ciguatoxins and brevetoxins: dissection of the neurobiological actions].
Journal de la Societe de biologie, 1999This review focuses on the neurobiological actions of ciguatoxins and brevetoxins which are phycotoxins produced respectively by the dinoflagellates Gambierdiscus toxicus and Ptychodiscus brevis. These actions are illustrated in particular by the effects of the toxins on myelinated nerve fibres and on skeletal neuromuscular junctions of vertebrates ...
