SUSTAINABILITY OF POULTRY PRODUCTION USING THE EMERGY APPROACH: COMPARISON OF CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC REARING SYSTEMS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The organic production system is an important strategy, compatible with sustainable agriculture, avoiding the use of chemical compounds, limiting the intensity of production and providing controls along the entire chain of production.

Manganese requirements of broiler breeder hens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2020
The present research was conducted to assess Mn requirements of broiler breeder hens. One hundred and twenty Cobb 500 hens, 22 wk of age, were individually allocated in cages. After fed a Mn-deficient diet (22.2 ppm), hens were randomly placed in treatments having 6 increments of 30-ppm Mn. All trace minerals were from laboratory grade sources being Mn

Heat Stress in Quail: Impacts on Health and Productivity, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts physiological homeostasis in quail, inducing oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, and metabolic imbalance, which impair growth, reproduction, product quality, and welfare. Integrating nutritional, environmental, and genetic–epigenetic strategies enhances thermotolerance, sustains productivity, and supports climate‐smart quail ...

Longitudinal study on background lesions in broiler breeder flocks and their progeny, and genomic characterisation of Escherichia coli

open access: yesVeterinary Research, 2022
In broiler breeders, background mortality is rarely addressed, however, it represents the death of a vast number of birds, a constant productivity loss, welfare concerns and it might affect chick quality.

Effect of Cyclic Heat Exposure on the Growth Performance and Metabolism of Broilers Fed Palm Kernel Meal

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The aim of our study is to evaluate the interaction between HS and the incorporation of PKM in broiler chicken diets, as well as its effect on growth performance and metabolism. Based on the results obtained, PKM supplementation failed to mitigate the adverse effects of heat stress in broiler chickens. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the

Sex differences in basal hypothalamic anorectic and orexigenic gene expression and the effect of quantitative and qualitative food restriction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Research into energy balance and growth has infrequently considered genetic sex, yet there is sexual dimorphism for growth across the animal kingdom.

Studies on the Biotin Requirement of Broiler Breeders ,

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1972
Abstract The minimum requirement of biotin for maximum hatchability of eggs and livability of chicks was determined for broiler breeder hens maintained in individual cages. Groups of hens were fed casein-gelatin, glucose diets containing 20, 40, 60, 100, 180 and 340 μg. biotin/kg. of diet. The requirement was found to be approximately 100 μg.

Integrating One Health to Mitigate the Emergence and Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance in Livestock and Aquaculture

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global threat driven by antimicrobial use in aquaculture and livestock. Resistant pathogens and genes can spread across humans, animals, and the environment through interconnected ecosystems. Using a One Health approach, this review emphasizes antimicrobial stewardship, regulatory strengthening, enhanced ...

Animal breeding in organic farming:Discussion paper [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
It is uncertain whether animals which have been bred for conventional production are capable of optimum performance in organic conditions. In conventional agriculture there is a movement towards maximum control of production conditions in order to ...
