The relationship of total and differential blood leukocyte counts with bronchial methacholine response was studied in a population-based sample of 324 men. Geometric mean total leukocyte counts were significantly higher in reactors (6567 cells/mm3) than in nonreactors (5732 cells/mm3; p = 0.003).

Methacholine inhalation tests are used to help in the diagnosis of asthma when spirometry is normal. However, the significance of increased methacholine responsiveness in patients with rhinitis and no symptoms of asthma is not known. We investigated the prevalence of bronchial asthma, immediate skin reactivity and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in 40 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Eight patients reported to have asthma while 29 were found responders to methacholine test (PC20 Mch < 64 mg/ml) and 21 were skin reactors.
