A Method for Studying the Activity of Preservatives and its Application to Bronopol

Journal of Applied Bacteriology, 1978
A device for dispensing up to 100 1 simultaneously from as many as 24 tubes arranged in a randomized block is described. As the device can also be used for dispensing single drops onto the surface of pre‐dried agar in Petri dishes, it can be used for viable counts.

Human metabolism and excretion kinetics of Bronopol after oral administration

Archives of Toxicology
Bronopol is a preservative mainly used in various industrial applications, but also in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The aim of this study was to investigate the human toxicokinetics of Bronopol after oral administration. Five volunteers (two male and three female) were orally dosed with 9.715 mg Bronopol (0.100 to 0.154 mg/kg bw) and their urine was ...

Antibacterial properties of plasma-modified and triclosan or bronopol coated polyethylene

Polymer, 2006
Abstract The antibacterial properties of medical polyethylene (PE) were enhanced by coating with triclosan or bronopol and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). O2 plasma was first employed to produce a more hydrophilic surface on the PE, followed by argon or hydrogen plasma treatment to enhance the coating of triclosan or bronopol onto the ...

[Contact allergy to the preservative bronopol].

Der Hautarzt; Zeitschrift fur Dermatologie, Venerologie, und verwandte Gebiete, 1987
Six cases of contact allergy to bronopol are described (5 females, 1 male; mean age, 60.8 years). Four patients suffered from stasis dermatitis of the lower leg. The cause of sensitization has been traced to bronopol-containing ointments in 5 of 6 cases. For patch testing 0.25% bronopol in petrolatum is recommended.

The percutaneous absorption and disposition of the antibacterial agent bronopol in rats and rabbits

Food and Cosmetics Toxicology, 1976
Abstract The antibacterial agent bronopol, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (labelled with carbon-14) was only slowly absorbed through the skin of rats and rabbits (11% in 24 hr), although greater absorption was found when solutions in acetone rather than in water were applied.

The biotransformation and disposition of bronopol following topical and intravenous administration to rats

Toxicology Letters, 1980
Approx. 40% of the topically applied dose of antibacterial agent [14C] bronopol([14C]BP) was absorbed through the rat skin within 24 h. Of the applied radioactivity, about 19% was excreted in the urine, feces and expired air. The 24 h recoveries of 14C in the urine and expired air were 15 and 2%, respectively, of the dose applied to the skin, and 74 ...

Pediatric “pet consort dermatitis”—Allergic contact dermatitis from transfer of bronopol from a pet cat

Pediatric Dermatology, 2018
AbstractConsort dermatitis refers to an allergic contact dermatitis caused by transfer from an intimate contact to a sensitized patient. Although close contact with other humans most commonly provokes consort dermatitis, pets have been the source in a minority of cases.

Determination of bronopol in cosmetic products by HPLC with electrochemical detection.

Die Pharmazie, 2001
A procedure is described for the assay of bronopol in cosmetics by HPLC coupled with constant-potential amperometric detection. Samples were analysed on an Alltima C18 column with methanol-phosphate buffer as the eluent and detected at a porous graphite electrode set at a reduction potential of -0.9 V.
