3D‐Printed Titanium Implants with Bioactive Peptide‐Polysaccharide Scaffolds for Personalized Bone Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Porous 3D‐printed titanium implants are made bioactive by integration with a supramolecular peptide‐hyaluronic acid nanofibrillar scaffold, without the addition of exogenous cells or growth factors. Uniform filling of the implant architecture promotes vascularized, spatially homogeneous bone regeneration, significantly enhancing osteogenesis throughout

Modeling Heat Flows in a Hibernating Black Bear

open access: yes, 2003
The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) has the ability to sustain a high core temperature throughout the duration of its hibernation cycle, even as outside temperatures fall to -20?C.

Metabolic reprogramming involving glycolysis in the hibernating brown bear skeletal muscle

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2019
In mammals, the hibernating state is characterized by biochemical adjustments, which include metabolic rate depression and a shift in the primary fuel oxidized from carbohydrates to lipids.

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.

Phantoms of the forest: legacy risk effects of a regionally extinct large carnivore [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The increased abundance of large carnivores in Europe is a conservation success, but the impact on the behavior and population dynamics of prey species is generally unknown.

Inferring fine-scale spatial structure of the brown bear (Ursus arctos) population in the Carpathians prior to infrastructure development

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
Landscape genetics is increasingly being used in landscape planning for biodiversity conservation by assessing habitat connectivity and identifying landscape barriers, using intraspecific genetic data and quantification of landscape heterogeneity to ...

New insights into the geographical distribution of brown bears Ursus arctos in Nepal

open access: yesOryx
In the current IUCN Red List assessment, the south-western distribution range of the brown bear Ursus arctos in Nepal ends in Upper Mustang, in the central Himalaya, and extends northwards into the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Although brown bears

Nonmulberry Silk Fibroin Doping Boosts Charge Transfer and Charge Injection in Aligned Polypyrrole‐Silk Scaffolds for Low‐Voltage Neurostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Conductive silk‐polypyrrole scaffolds couple redox stability with cell‐affinitive peptides present innately in an endogenous silk fibroin, enabling optimized electrical stimulation to drive neurite outgrowth. Findings establish electrochemical‐biological link for biomaterial design rules for smart nerve guidance conduits that can provide low voltage ...
