Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4), a novel brown fat–enriched hormone, plays a key role in the modulation of glucose and lipid metabolism and energy balance. Recent data have demonstrated that the expression of Nrg4 is substantially down‐regulated in mouse and human ...

Ovarian steroids, such as estradiol (E2), control a vastness of physiological processes, such as puberty, reproduction, growth, development and metabolic rate. In fact, physiological, pathological, pharmacological or genetically-induced estrogen deficiency causes increased appetite and reduced energy expenditure, promoting weight gain and ultimately ...

DAWKINS et al.1 have presented results of an investigation of the localization of catecholamines in brown fat, in which they used the histochemical fluorescence method of Falck and Hillarp2,3. They found a distinct fluorescence within the cytoplasm of the brown fat cells and in nerve fibres of the parenchyma.

Hibernoma is the term which has been given to a very rare human neoplasm of brown fat. Brown fat is a little understood tissue which has been found in many different animals, including man. 1 It is most highly developed in hibernating animals and for a long time was thought to play an important role during the state of hibernation; hence, the name ...

Publisher Summary Brown fat cells produce heat by oxidation of the fatty acids. Isolated cells are prepared by collagenase treatment of brown fat from hamsters and rats. The chapter outlines the isolation procedure for the brown fat cells and discusses the properties of the isolated cell suspension.

Brown fat is present and metabolically active in adults, and is involved in physiologic and pathologic processes. Brown fat activation can seriously interfere with correct [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose-PET image interpretation if not recognized, although this can be overcome through identification of typical uptake patterns, pharmacological and ...

Humans, like other mammals, contain two functionally distinct types of fat cells: white fat cells, which store chemical energy and are associated with obesity, and brown fat cells, which are specialized to produce heat and can help combat obesity (see Cannon and Nedergaard). Noting that some bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) promote white
