Towards more inclusive long-term bulk water resource management [PDF]

open access: yes
Fresh water resources provide a platform for complex and often emotional issues to develop, particularly in resource scarcity situations. Bulk water infrastructure contains elements of a public good and proved vulnerable to failures in market and ...

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

A coupled electromagnetic / hydrodynamic model for the design of an integrated rim - driven naval propulsion system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents an analytical multi-physic modeling tool for the design optimization of a new kind of naval propulsion system. This innovative technology consists in an electrical permanent magnet motor that is integrated into a duct and surrounds a ...

Hidden order revealed by light-driven Kerr rotation in centrosymmetric bulk WSe2

open access: yesnpj 2D Materials and Applications
Single-layer semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides, lacking point inversion symmetry, provide an efficient platform for valleytronics, where the electronic, orbital, magnetic, valley, and lattice degrees of freedom can be selectively ...

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

Fermi liquid and isotropic superconductivity of Hund scenario for bilayer nickelates

open access: yesnpj Quantum Materials
Recent experiments on bulk and thin film bilayer nickelate high-T c superconductors urge for clarification of their pairing mechanism. Debates exist on whether the hybridization or the Hund’s coupling between the nickel $${d}_{{x}^{2}-{y}^{2}}$$ d x 2 ...

Physicochemical vs. Chemical Pathways of Foam Inhibition: The Role of Cohesive Pressure and Specific Ion-Pairing

open access: yesSurfaces
This study investigates the inhibitory effects of alkali metal chlorides lithium chloride, sodium chloride and potassium chloride (LiCl, NaCl, and KCl) on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) foams, focusing on the transition from interfacial to bulk-driven ...

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

The ubiquitin system in normal and infected germinal center B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The ubiquitin system plays a central role in germinal center (GC) B cells, influencing differentiation to long‐lived memory B cells. Oncogenic gammaherpesviruses gain access to memory B cells by establishing latency in GC B cells. Mapping ubiquitin mechanisms in normal and infected GC B cells will define specific molecular circuits in B cells germane ...
