Morphologic Differentiation of Viruses beyond the Family Level

open access: yesViruses, 2014
Electron microscopy has been instrumental in the identification of viruses by being able to characterize a virus to the family level. There are a few cases where morphologic or morphogenesis factors can be used to differentiate further, to the genus ...

Molecular Screening of Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) for Vector‐Borne Zoonotic Pathogens, South Moravia, Czech Republic

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, Volume 73, Issue 1, Page 95-106, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Black flies (Simuliidae) are globally distributed blood‐feeding arthropods and vectors of viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens to many animal species, including humans. We investigated the occurrence of selected vector‐borne pathogens in black flies in South Moravia, Czech Republic, and evaluated their possible role in the ...

Breeding for quantitative disease resistance: Case studies, emerging approaches, and exploiting pathogen variation

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 65, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract Host resistance, using qualitative genes with major effects, such as resistance (R) genes, is one of the most effective disease control strategies. However, because major gene‐derived resistance wanes over time, breeders must increasingly focus on quantitative trait loci and minor effect genes, which, when pyramided together, can confer ...

A Pyrido‐Quinoxaline Derivative That Downregulates Reticulon 3 Protein Exhibits Potent Antiviral Activity Against Zika Virus

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT In the wake of the COVID‐19 pandemic, awareness of emerging pathogens has significantly increased, prompting greater investment in research and preparedness. In this context, arboviral diseases are recognized as unmet medical challenges due to their rapid spread. Notably, the geographical range of several flaviviral diseases is expanding: Zika
