Genome-wide identification of SHMT family genes in C3, C3-C4, and C4 Salsoleae s.l. species [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
C4 photosynthesis is a carbon-concentrating mechanism that evolved to enhance photosynthetic efficiency under conditions favoring photorespiration, such as high temperature, low atmospheric CO2, and aridity.

Weeds in a changing climate: Competitors or service plants?

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Reducing herbicide use and preparing agroecosystems for climate change are two top priorities on the global policy agenda. Here, we explore whether these two challenges can be tackled simultaneously. While weeds are generally considered a threat to crop production, we show that weeds can help overcome climate change challenges in agroecosystems ...

Nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications for the sotol plant (Asparagaceae, Convallarioideae): A review

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) is a resilient desert plant that sustains ecosystems, cultures and livelihoods in Chihuahua Desert. Our review highlights its nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications in food, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and water remediation. By synthesizing evidence across disciplines, we show how sotol can

Nitrogen Addition Increases the Sensitivity of Photosynthesis to Drought and Re-watering Differentially in C3 Versus C4 Grass Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Global change factors, such as variation in precipitation regimes and nitrogen (N) deposition, are likely to occur simultaneously and may have profound impacts on the relative abundance of grasses differing in functional traits, such as C3 and C4 species.

Gene turnover in the common ancestor of all C4 grasses

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Understanding how plants evolve more efficient photosynthesis is important in a warming world where improving crop productivity and resilience is a global priority. By generating the first reference genomes for an early‐diverging group of grasses called the Aristidoideae, we were able to reconstruct the genetic makeup of the last common ancestor of all

Metabolomics of related C3 and C4 Flaveria species indicate differences in the operation of photorespiration under fluctuating light

open access: yesPlant Direct
C3 photosynthesis can be complemented with a C4 carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) to minimize photorespiratory losses. C4 photosynthesis is often more efficient than C3 under steady‐state conditions.

Modeling of Processes of Photosynthesis and Photorespiration of C3-Plants

open access: yesМатематическая биология и биоинформатика, 2015
The article describes a mathematical model of photosynthesis and photorespiration of C 3 -plants in the natural environment. The model is sort of physiological one because it takes into account the effect of nitrogen deficiency on the intensity of these processes.

Effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) and its herbicide response

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Elevated CO2 promotes the growth of Xanthium strumarium while increasing its susceptibility to the systemic herbicide trifloxysulfuron‐sodium. The efficacy of the soil‐active herbicide fluometuron remains unaffected by changes in CO2 concentration and temperature.

A framework to evaluate and identify development requirements for land‐surface models at km‐scale resolution: Application to a semi‐arid and mountainous region

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This article provides a first evaluation of land‐surface models at the km‐scale resolutions at which they are used in weather and Earth‐system models. At these resolutions, the lateral transfers of water that organize landscapes play an important role in predicting evaporation correctly. Riparian processes and human water management for irrigation need

Seasonal Variation in Carbon Dynamics in the Lower Tocantins River: Influence of Discharge and Environmental Drivers

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Tropical rivers play a key role in regional carbon budgets, yet greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics in regulated systems remain poorly understood. This study investigates the seasonal variability of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations, isotopic composition (δ13C), and river‐atmosphere fluxes in the lower Tocantins River, a ...
