Hot and cold deserts as eco‐evolutionary arenas for understanding plant resistance to multiple abiotic stressors

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During their long evolutionary history, land plants have evolved a range of adaptations to different abiotic stressors. These help explain present‐day diversity and distribution patterns, as well as the potential resilience of natural and agricultural systems to a changing climate. Most previous research has focused on adaptation to individual

Resolving the biome debate: ecological and palaeo‐data concur that the extensive tree‐limited grassy biomes of central and north‐western Madagascar are largely anthropogenic

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT For millennia, human activities have transformed ecosystems globally. Determining which landscapes are predominantly anthropogenic is crucial to conservation and habitat restoration. Madagascar, a critically‐threatened biodiversity hotspot, is a prominent example.

C4 photosynthetic machinery: insights from maize chloroplast proteomics

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2013
C4 plants exhibit much higher CO2 assimilation rates than C3 plants. The specialized differentiation of mesophyll cell (M) and bundle sheath cell (BS) type chloroplasts is unique to C4 plants and improves photosynthesis efficiency. Maize (Zea mays) is an

Whole genome sequencing and assembly data of Moricandia moricandioides and M. arvensis

open access: yesData in Brief, 2021
Moricandia is a genus belonging to the family Brassicaceae. C3 and C3C4 photosynthesis Moricandia species exist in a close phylogenetic proximity, as well as to Brassica crops. Here, we performed PacBio genome sequencing on M.

Delayed rainfall diminishes the positive response of soil respiration to warming

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Warming stimulates soil respiration and its components, while delayed rainfall suppresses them. Crucially, delayed rainfall diminishes or even reverses the positive response of soil respiration to warming by intensifying the drought stress, and autotrophic respiration is more vulnerable than heterotrophic respiration under this interaction.

Towards Water, Food and Energy Security: The Global Challenges and Possible Solutions for a Holistic Vision of Sustainability

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This invited paper gives an overview of the challenges the world is facing and offers a possible solution for water and food security within the holistic integrated concept of the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus. The paper summarizes the experience the author gained through working on various research projects at national and international ...

LEAF ANATOMY CHARACTERIZATION OF FOUR Apochloa SPECIES: A C3 GENUS RELATED TO EVOLUTION OF C4 PATHWAY IN GRASSES

open access: yesActa Biológica Colombiana, 2020
Leaf anatomy characteristics provide important evidences about the transition between C3 and C4 pathways. The C4 photosynthesis pathway allowed to reduce the C3 photorespiratory rate, concentrating CO2 around the Rubisco site and using structures and ...

Dental enamel hypoplasia and intra‐tooth isotope records as indicators of physiological stress and environmental variability in Early Pleistocene hippopotamids from Melka Kunture (Upper Awash, Ethiopia)

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Enamel hypoplasia results from temporary disruptions of enamel deposition during tooth development. It is widely used as an indicator of physiological stress in archeological and paleontological contexts; yet, its relationship with environmental conditions during tooth formation remains poorly constrained.

Shining fresh light on the evolution of photosynthesis

open access: yeseLife, 2013
There are two types of photosynthesis, C3 and C4, and computational techniques have been used to explore how C4 plants evolved from their C3 ancestors.

The Roles of Organic Acids in C4 Photosynthesis [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2016
Organic acids are involved in numerous metabolic pathways in all plants. The finding that some plants, known as C4 plants, have four-carbon dicarboxylic acids as the first product of carbon fixation showed these organic acids play essential roles as photosynthetic intermediates.
