Advancing Human Skin Equivalents: The Crucial Role of Neurovascular Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review discusses the importance of integrating vascular and peripheral nerve systems into human skin equivalents (HSEs) to better recapitulate native skin physiology. Recent advances in vascularized, innervated, and neurovascularized HSEs are highlighted, together with emerging bioengineering strategies, current challenges, and future ...

Blood–Brain Barrier Regulation: Evolving From Classic Strategies to Electrochemical Ion and Reactive Oxygen Species Control

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Conventional therapies suffer from poor blood–brain barrier (BBB) penetration and disordered ion/reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, hindering precise neurological treatment. Electrochemical strategies achieve accurate spatiotemporal regulation of neural homeostasis.

Host-derived stimuli alter intracellular calcium levels in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, revealing its potential role as a second messenger

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology
Calcium signaling is a fundamental cellular communication mechanism, well established in eukaryotes, that relies on calcium ions (Ca2+) acting both as first and second messengers to regulate diverse life-sustaining processes.

Mitochondrial calcium uptake orchestrates vertebrate pigmentation via transcriptional regulation of keratin filaments.

open access: yesPLoS Biology
Mitochondria regulate several physiological functions through mitochondrial Ca2+ dynamics. However, role of mitochondrial Ca2+ signaling in melanosome biology remains unknown. Here, we show that pigmentation requires mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake.

Signal Transduction and Ca2+ Signaling in Intact Myocardium

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2006
The experimental procedures to simultaneously detect contractile activity and Ca(2+) transients by means of the Ca(2+) sensitive bioluminescent protein aequorin in multicellular preparations, and the fluorescent dye indo-1 in single myocytes, provide powerful tools to differentiate the regulatory mechanisms of intrinsic and external inotropic ...

Programmable Functional Silicification of DNA Origami Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces additional functionality into silica‐coated DNA origami nanostructures using non‐standard silica precursors. A fluorescent precursor enables enhanced intracellular tracking, while a disulfide‐containing reagent yields redox‐responsive, degradable silica coatings.

Self‐Assembling Copolymers Encapsulating Single Endothelial Cells Induce Endogenous ECM Deposition and Vascular Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the first demonstration of stable sub‐50‐micron single‐cell GPM vesicles fabricated through the intrinsic self‐assembly of an amphiphilic copolymer. Hierarchical assembly of cell containing GPM vesicles into microspheres enable tunable, sustained cell delivery with immune protection.
