Defective RNA packaging is responsible for low transduction efficiency of CAEV-based vectors}
Archives of Virology, 1998Replication defective retroviral vectors are regularly used for transfer and expression of exogenous genes into dividing cells and in animals. Since lentiviruses are able to infect terminally differentiated and non-dividing cells, their use to produce replication defective vectors may overcome this limitation.

The transmission of CAEV from male goats has not been well studied and the target cells that support viral replication are not well characterized. Epididymal epithelial cells (EECs) are important and play a key role in the fertility and motility of spermatozoa.

This study characterized immune responses of Saanen goats co-immunized with pUC18 based plasmids expressing caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) rev-env (pENV) or tat-rev-env (pTAT-ENV) and a second plasmid encoding caprine interferon gamma (IFNgamma). A previous study reported that immunization with pENV or pTAT-ENV induces IgG2 biased antibody

EIAV, CAEV and other lentivirus vector systems.
Somatic cell and molecular genetics, 2002Lentiviruses that infect non-primates make up a diverse collection of viruses. Although these viruses have some features in common with HIV and other primate viruses, differences in genome organization and viral gene function have made the successful derivation of vectors from non-primate lentiviruses unpredictable.

[Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV). Short review].
Annales de recherches veterinaires. Annals of veterinary research, 1984After a short history, this work shows frequency of the articular form of the disease in France, and isolation of the virus. Although related to retrovirus, CAEV and maedi-visna have some differences: tropism of CAEV only for goats, low replication and expression in vitro, characteristic differences in protein composition.

Analysis of caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) temporal gene expression in infected cells
Virus Research, 2002Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus that is closely related to visna virus and more distantly related to the human lentivirus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1). The CAEV genome contains several small open reading frames (ORFs) that encode viral regulatory proteins.
