Quick Returns: A Quasi‐Experimental Field Study on the Effects on Sleep, Fatigue and Cognitive Performance

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As sleep restriction has negative effects on performance, ensuring sufficient sleep for shift workers is essential. Quick returns (< 11 h off between shifts) shorten sleep and are associated with increased fatigue and risk of accidents, but there is limited research on other aspects of cognitive performance and work performance. The aim of the

Influence of Chronotype on Cycling Performance in Simulated 20‐km Time Trials—A Pilot Study

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
Evening‐type athletes show improved cycling performance later in the day, whilst morning types peak earlier. These differences appear linked to variations in mental readiness and sleepiness, highlighting the importance of considering chronotype in performance planning.

Acute Effects of Sleep Extension on Fatigue, Inhibitory Control, Short‐Term Vigilance and Neuromuscular Function in Youth Elite Ice Hockey Players: A Randomised Crossover Trial

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
Scheduling a 10‐h sleep opportunity (sleep extension) in elite youth athletes increased total sleep time by approximately 1 h compared to normal sleep. Cognitive performance on an inhibitory control task (20‐min colour multisource interference task; cMSIT) improved after sleep extension, and this was accompanied by an overall lower perception of ...

Increased p‐Tau181 Levels After Overnight Wakefulness Are Associated With Neuroticism in Young Women

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
Overnight wakefulness, mimicking night shift conditions, impaired morning vigilance in healthy, reproductive‐aged women, regardless of estradiol or neuroticism. However, the overnight wakefulness‐related rise in the Alzheimer's disease blood biomarker p‐Tau181 was greater in women with higher neuroticism, suggesting that neurobiological vulnerability ...

Delta‐9‐Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Before Bedtime: Feasibility and Mechanistic Pilot Study on Sleep and Cardiac Autonomic Activity

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disordered sleep is a common reason individuals report using cannabis, yet the physiological effects of Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) on sleep and autonomic regulation remain incompletely understood. Early studies reported acute sleep‐promoting effects of Δ9‐THC, but chronic use has been associated with disrupted sleep and possible ...

Rest Assured: The Association of Structural, Functional Support, and Loneliness With Subjective Sleep Health

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sleep is increasingly understood as a socially embedded phenomenon. This study examined how structural and functional aspects of social support, as well as loneliness, relate to sleep health in a German sample of middle‐aged adults (N = 5388).

The Structure of Carboxyl Methyltransferase Provides Insights Into the Substrate Specificity and Divergent Evolution of Iridoid

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iridoids constitute a prominent class of plant‐specialised metabolites, with carbocyclic iridoids (e.g., geniposide) and secoiridoids (e.g., loganin) diverging early in their biosynthetic pathways. This divergence is marked by substrate‐specific carboxyl methyltransferases—GjGAMT and CrLAMT—that catalyse the decisive methylation step in ...
