Calcitonin gene-related peptide and the kidney

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 1994
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a recently discovered neurotransmitter that is extensively localized in fibers innervating vascular and endocrine systems. CGRP possesses potent vasorelaxant effects, and a role for this peptide in the regional regulation of blood flow has been suggested. Although pharmacologic evidence indicates that the renal

Calcitonin gene-related peptide and migraine

Current Opinion in Neurology, 2015
Migraine is a common, complex disorder of the brain with significant morbidity. As the pathophysiology of the disorder has become better appreciated, the role of neuropeptides has been explored. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has emerged as a promising therapeutic target.CGRP is widely distributed in the nervous system, particularly at ...

Calcitonin and calcitonin gene-related peptide in the human prostate gland

The Prostate, 2000
Calcitonin-related peptides have been found in the human prostate, and calcitonin (CT) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) have been demonstrated in subpopulations of neuroendocrine (NE) cells. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of CT and CGRP as well as the densities of NE cells in normal prostates, benign prostatic ...

Calcitonin and Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide

1989
The Ca++ ion plays a critical role in neuronal transmission. Therefore, agents capable of modulating it can exert profound effects on the cell’s ability to interpret extracellular signals. In 1964, Hano et al.1 reported that intracisternal Ca++ administration antagonized the action of morphine, which, conversely, was potentiated by the Ca++ chelator ...

Amylin, Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide, Calcitonin, and Adrenomedullin: A Peptide Superfamily

Critical Reviews™ in Neurobiology, 1997
The calcitonin gene peptide superfamily consists of calcitonin (CT), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and amylin. CT and CGRP derive from the CT/CGRP gene, which is encoded on chromosome 11. Alternative splicing of the primary RNA transcript leads to the translation of CGRP and CT peptides in a tissue-specific manner.

Molecular cloning and expression of equine calcitonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide-I, and calcitonin gene-related peptide-II

Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2003
In this study, we describe the cloning and tissue expression of equine calcitonin (CT), calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP)-I, and CGRP-II cDNA. We also describe a novel divergent form of CGRP (CGRP-I). Equine CT has greatest homology (>85%) to human, rat and mouse subgroups of calcitonins.

CALCITONIN GENE‐RELATED PEPTIDE AND CALCITONIN IN MEDULLARY THYROID CARCINOMA

Clinical Endocrinology, 1986
SUMMARYWe have investigated the levels of serum calcitonin and calcitonin‐gene related peptide (CGRP) in 35 patients with well‐documented medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Immunohistochemical investigations for calcitonin and CGRP have been performed on tumour tissue from 9 patients to clarify the cellular pattern of production.

Stimulation of calcitonin secretion in the pig by calcitonin gene-related peptide

Bone and Mineral, 1991
Pig thyroid glands were surgically isolated in situ and perfused with autologous blood to which was added known concentrations of calcitonin gene-related peptide (alpha CGRP). When thyroids were perfused with measured concentrations of CGRP within the range of 0.6-600 nM, the secretion rate of calcitonin (CT) was stimulated while the release of T3, T4,

Ontogeny of calcitonin gene-related peptide and calcitonin in the rat thyroid

Histochemistry, 1986
In this immunohistochemical study, the ontogenic development of calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the rat thyroid was investigated and compared with that of calcitonin using the indirect-immunofluorescence method. Parafollicular cells with immunoreactivity to both CGRP and calcitonin first appeared at an early stage of gestation (days 17 and 18)
